Pulitzer Prize–winning literary critic Michiko Kakutani shares her enthusiasm for more than 100 books in a series of succinct, thought-provoking essays.
“An ebullient celebration of books and reading.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Books can connect people across time zones and zip codes, across cultures, national boundaries, and historical eras,” Kakutani writes in her introduction to Ex Libris.
Here readers will discover novels and memoirs by some of the most gifted writers working today; favorite classics worth reading or rereading; and nonfiction works, both old and new, that illuminate our social and political landscape and some of today’s most pressing issues, from climate change to medicine to the consequences of digital innovation.
There are essential works in American history (The Federalist Papers, The Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr.); books that address timely cultural dynamics (Elizabeth Kolbert’s The Sixth Extinction, Daniel J. Boorstin’s The Image, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale); classics of children’s literature (the Harry Potter novels, Where the Wild Things Are); and novels by acclaimed contemporary writers like Don DeLillo, William Gibson, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Ian McEwan.
There can never be too many books on books. You may discover a one new to you.

Penned by the author of ‘The Death of Truth: Notes on Falsehood in the Age of Trump’, this must be one hell of a truthful and objective book on books.

Alnilam’s attempt at sarcasm fails because there is no daylight between what he is saying and the actual fact.

This may, or may not be the case.
I’m for applying exactly the same standards and treating all parties equally, regardless of political affiliations, personal likes and dislikes, not to mention artificially created media hysteria. And this is exactly where the “Trump living rent-free in their head” crowd fails miserably, the author of this book included. It seems they believe that their magical moral relativism device, i.e. observing different parties through opposite ends of telescope and cranking up and down the mass media megaphone volume respectively will help them to achieve smashing success.

Oh, this is a missed opportunity. The mediocrity of many of the books presented here suggest that the writer is an unreliable judge of great books. Don’t waste your time.

alnilam, after reading your comments under many books, I can say with surety that you are not the unbiased observer you pose yourself as.
This is literally just a book about books that someone read. I don’t know if you’re a big reader or if you just like leaving a lot of comments under books you’ll never read, but as someone who routinely reads triple digits worth of books in a year, I know how I would feel if someone needlessly brought politics into a conversation

I must agree with Matty here
