Americans have never been more divided, and we’re ripe for a breakup. The bitter partisan animosities, the legislative gridlock, the growing acceptance of violence in the name of political virtue—it all invites us to think that we’d be happier were we two different countries. In all the ways that matter, save for the naked force of law, we are already two nations.
There’s another reason why secession beckons, says F.H. Buckley: we’re too big. In population and area, the United States is one of the biggest countries in the world, and American Secession provides data showing that smaller countries are happier and less corrupt. They’re less inclined to throw their weight around militarily, and they’re freer too. There are advantages to bigness, certainly, but the costs exceed the benefits. On many counts, bigness is badness.
Across the world, large countries are staring down secession movements. Many have already split apart. Do we imagine that we, almost alone in the world, are immune? We had a civil war to prevent a secession, and we’re tempted to see that terrible precedent as proof against another effort. This book explodes that comforting belief and shows just how easy it would be for a state to exit the Union if that’s what its voters wanted.
But if that isn’t what we really want, Buckley proposes another option, a kind of Secession Lite, that could heal our divisions while allowing us to keep our identity as Americans.

If secession occurs in some shape or another (I think there would have to be mass movements of people) can we do it cooperatively and peacefully this time?

There is no way to succeed from the United States, the civil war settled that. If people take up arm against the government they will quickly be put down and the 2nd amendment will be abolished, killing two birds with one stone.
So this should be in the fiction category.

The American Civil War is an example of how war, admittedly in the most awful fashion, can settle issues. In this instance, the Constitutional legality of slavery & whether secession was possible (which had been a moot point in the founding document). A speculative exploration of the law is always intriguing, however. As it says above, democratic institutions & accountability can be unwieldy in a large entity.

I think you’re being too hasty CCreader. Anything can happen if there is a will to make it happen. If BOTH sides of an ideological divide see living side by side is impossible, there very well could be a separation.
What is so special out the US? Freedom. If a totalitarian govt. must be put in place to squelch dissidents, what have you saved?

ccreader Not so fast. Although right now it’s unique, Texas has in its state constitution the right to depart the US. That’s why it’s the Republic of Texas. Using that as precedent, another state (or states) could grant themselves the ability. Obviously, Texas entered the Union with its own constitution in place, but the fact that one state can, it’s well possible that another could, especially if a state’s government decides that free-market capitalism is becoming detrimental to the state as a whole (thinking here about the corn belt states, whose economies rise and fall with the prices of their goods).

In an April 2009 speech, Rick Perry, the Governor of Texas, raised the issue of secession in disputed comments during a speech at a Tea Party protest saying “Texas is a unique place. When we came into the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that … My hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention. We’ve got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, who knows what may come of that.”

@ProfitPagan Tell em. Ccreader is however right, I suspect, in this segment of sentence: The U.S will pound The Republic of Texas into a large stable or parking lot. It has never respected any other nation’s constitution that it didn’t help write (it help write Germany’s, Japan’s after WWII and others). Despite all our disagreements and diversion of opinions, we all ultimately love our country not necessarily our Government and its Governing body. Texas is the world’s 6th largest economy. Yes it surpasses that of Canada and even Russia proper. So it can not only just walk on its own but run. However all business not solicited by and under its own Constitution, The Union will strip away before any secession ink is dry. This I’m sure is what has kept them up at night and delayed their secession. Delayed but not stopped.
