Why Marx Was Right: 2nd Edition - Terry Eagleton

In this combative, controversial book, Terry Eagleton takes issue with the prejudice that Marxism is dead and done with. Taking 10 of the most common objections to Marxism - that it leads to political tyranny, that it reduces everything to the economic, that it is a form of historical determinism, and so on - he demonstrates in each case what a woeful travesty of Marx’s own thought these assumptions are.
In a world in which capitalism has been shaken to its roots by some major crises, Why Marx Was Right is as urgent and timely as it is brave and candid. Written with Eagleton’s familiar wit, humor, and clarity, it will attract an audience far beyond the confines of academia.

Now that’s what I call a hot-f***ing-take.

He may have championed the proletariat in his writings, but when it came to selecting a partner he set his sights a little higher and chose to marry Jenny von Westphalen, whose father was the daughter of a Prussian baron and whose mother’s family were the Dukes of Argyll, for centuries Scotland’s most powerful aristocratic family.
The first champagne socialist!

I don’t think Communism got tried quite hard enough. If only Stalin had purged a few more thousand or million people. If only Pol Pot hadn’t been quite so merciful. If only Che Guavara had organized a few more labor camps. If only Mao had murdered a few more student protesters, why then I’m sure Communism would have worked.

Thanks for this one

@itxlan - “Jenny von Westphalen, whose father was the daughter of a Prussian baron”
At least Marx knew how to construct a sentence.

Ha ha ha ha ha. I enjoyed the title a lot. There’s always someone out there trying. I am sure Marx was a really nice guy. “it will attract an audience far beyond the confines of academia” — clearly, you have to be completely uneducated in the areas of economics and history to go for this idea.

When I think of Capitalism I remember the scene in the Matrix where Morpheus explaind how human beings have been stripped of everything that makes them people…
“And standing there, facing the pure horrifying precision, I came to realize the obviousness of the truth. What is the Matrix? Control. The Matrix is a computer generated dream world, built to keep us under control in order to change a human being into this.”
[holds up a copper-top D cell battery]
Under Capitalism you are a unit of production… and nothing more.

Hehe, luring trigger words galore ;D
If you straight equal marxism, communism, stalinism and maoism you should mayhaps consider listening to that book. Not that you should like it. But maybe you would learn a thing or two about these concepts, and do history and those who lived and died in it a tiny bit less injustice.
But folks - comments are meant for things related to the audiobook, not your world view. Like “how long is this?” or “it sounds too muffled” or “hey, great narrator” or a plain “thank you daenigma100 for sharing this”…

A disgusting ideology, that has never led to anything other than terror, pain and death.
I fervently hope that this blatant propaganda dosen’t infect anyone.

This communistic crap, and the people who try to spread it (aka America-hating college kids/millennials, and indoctrinating communist kook professors), are
a cancer to American society. If you are into this kind of crap, leave American.Now.

Film your Marxist professors (then upload them to the internet), and make the college leadership aware too. We can’t have this kind of communist crap spreading in the US, and they should not receive support to poison our country.

Ignore the anti democratic comments above. Democratic ideas allow for all sides to have a say. Anyone that try to supress ideas is anti democratic and a threat to democracy. Thank you for the upload.

Very short book. Just said, “He wasn’t. The End” Then it was finished. 10/10. Would listen to again.

Cluckers, then I hope you also wouldn’t mind entertaining the idea of “Hitler did nothing wrong” - otherwise you would be a hypocrite. I mean, you would be “suppressing ideas” and “therefore a threat to democracy!”
COMMUNISM is not democractic, btw.

If you think Marx was wrong then pick up a history book and read about the British society BEFORE the Communist Revolution in Russia. The richest empire in the world offered the most disgusting living-conditions to its poor. The fear of a Marxist revolution in Britain gave you the weekend, the eight hour working day, the employment rights, and later on (under the Labour party)social security and our free health service (in UK).

Thank you for the upload, it should do well to help remind us that Marxism is just as alive as it is dangerous. The man was delusional.

Love it how gun loving rednecks are triggered. Great read.

Seems to me like most Marxist apologists tend to rely on an appeal to purity in defence of their ideological bias. For a fuller explanation of what I mean, I’m going to lazily copy and paste something from Wikipedia that’ll better explain it than I can….
No true Scotsman, or appeal to purity, is an informal fallacy in which one attempts to protect their universal generalization from a counterexample in an ad hoc fashion by tautologically excluding the counterexample. Rather than abandoning the universal generalization or providing evidence that would disqualify the counterexample, this fallacy involves offering a modified generalization to definitionally exclude the desired specific case and counterexamples like it by appeal to rhetoric as opposed to an objective criterion. This rhetoric takes the form of emotionally charged but nonsubstantive purity platitudes such as ‘‘true, pure, genuine, authentic, real, etc.’’
