This new book substantially expands on the original 1619 Project, weaving together eighteen essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance. The essays show how the inheritance of 1619 reaches into every part of contemporary American society, from politics, music, diet, traffic, and citizenship to capitalism, religion, and our democracy itself. This legacy can be seen in the way we tell stories, the way we teach our children, and the way we remember. Together, the elements of the book reveal a new origin story for the United States, one that helps explain not only the persistence of anti-Black racism and inequality in American life today, but also the roots of what makes the country unique.
The book also features a significant elaboration of the original project’s Pulitzer Prize-winning lead essay, by Nikole Hannah-Jones, on how the struggles of Black Americans have expanded democracy for all Americans, as well as two original pieces from Hannah-Jones, one of which makes a profound case for reparative solutions to this legacy of injustice.
This is a book that speaks directly to our current moment, contextualizing the systems of race and caste within which we operate today. It reveals long-glossed-over truths around our nation’s founding and construction - and the way that the legacy of slavery did not end with emancipation, but continues to shape contemporary American life.

Thank you for the upload. Hopefully more people will take this opportunity to educate themselves rather than let other people tell them how to think. As history is told by the victors, getting different perspectives of the same history fills out the context of our shared history. A lot of what is taught is a singular experience often told by those of much more means and education than the common people (hence, why they left records). The 1619 Project doesn’t change history, it enriches it.

@Highlandcharge I think you’re confused, decrying a blanket accusation and then adding your own blanket assertion. What is fake? Did slaves not arrive on the US coast in 1619? Were the next 346 years of institutionalized slavery also fake? I guess, instead of naming an entire list of facts to rhetorically ask whether you believe each is fake, maybe you should think about why you think any of it is fake. It’s not. It doesn’t change anything knowing it’s not fake. No one’s asking you to apologize for something you had nothing to do with. No one’s asking for you to single-handedly shoulder the responsibility of three centuries of systemic racism. And no one’s asking you to take your turn being 3/5 of a person with no individual liberty or rights. (Depending on your country, you might already have an idea of how it’d be.) Suck it up and learn something. At least you’ll know what you’re arguing against. It won’t make your charge of ‘fake history’ any less absurd but maybe it’ll enlighten you as to how dumb that declaration comes across.

I was going to write some snark but deleted it after the post from Malachie520. Intelligent and really nothing to argue against. But still for me, I’ve had it up to here with white guilt.
All we seem to concentrate on is the history of black people in the USA. They really aren’t that important in the scheme of things unless you like sports and music and books on racism. The history of white people is so much more interesting. Show me a people on this planet that wasn’t enslaved at some point. Life has never been fair.

The first to kill an ‘Indian’ was…an Indian. The first to kill a Jew was…a Jew. The first to kill an Asian was…an Asian. Are you detecting a pattern yet? Does the fact that Africans rounded up the slaves and then sold them to White (and Black) people absolve the U.S. for their institutionalization of slavery? Sure, every civilization in history has had slavery. The U.S. just did it better, much like Jews have been massacred and scapegoated through much of C.E. history but no one can touch the Nazis for their propaganda campaign and then assembly-line slaughter, not even the Romans…and 66 A.D. caused a cataclysm for that religion. And while every other major civilization in history had slavery, slaves were not the chattel the U.S. perfected. They often had ‘rights’ that Black slaves in 1840 could only dream about. Often, they could buy back their freedom (or earn it in some other way). The U.S. made slavery hereditary. They made it a business. Indigenous people would also take captured prisoners as slaves. Sometimes these slaves were to act as surrogates to family members killed or lost in battles and could eventually become part of the family. Until 1619, slavery was more a temporary state of being. When Blacks came ashore to a nation awash with White people longing for liberty (and waging war against the Red Man to have this God-given right to liberty), their status as slaves became permanent. It’s the complete opposite of the American Dream whereby if you work hard enough, you can have a good life.
To say that this isn’t history (because it’s been debunked, yada yada) indicates maybe you expected someone like Nathaniel Philbrick or H.W. Brands as the author. That wasn’t the case. And it’s easy to pick apart arguments when you have the list in front of you (Britain couldn’t possibly have done that because they weren’t real until 1707 blah blah blah). It’s more impressive the parallel lines the 1619 Project drew tracing the network of prejudice into nearly every facet of our everyday lives, mostly with us unaware of the roots in disenfranchisement our storied institutions were built upon.
And don’t dismiss fiction as a source of history! Have you ever heard of the Flash language? Anyone who has read Lyndsay Faye’s Timothy Wilde trilogy does. It was a unique dialect spoken in the mid-1800s, her books taking place in New York City. We owe many of our common words today to this dialect. You probably didn’t know that. Thanks to the very well-researched historical fiction by a great author, you do now. This conversation is aces!

Black people have barely achieved anything noteworthy in history. The vast majority of inventions and discoveries have been by white Europeans, and particularly the British. Even the internet and or phones are the result of white people, not to mention the freedom to analyse and criticize everything, including our governments. History itself was a white invention. Get rid of European history and you get rid of the free world. You would be under the thumb of the Russians, Chinese or Arabs and how would that work out? There is a reason that the documents of freedom aren’t written in those languages.
The world owes white Europeans, and particularly the British, a debt that can never be repaid. They should be holding them in the highest possible regard. Until recently black people were living in the stone age and running round eating each other. Their rights and modern civilisation are a white invention.

As for the Middle East, they may have started civilisation, but they’ve hardly moved on from pre Enlightenment. It’s a bit rich having the rest of the world telling the West that we must embrace multiculturalism whilst there’s a deep sectarian and ethnic hatred in the Middle East which goes all the way break to the Pharaohs. The West is demonised for its past mistakes and they’re still blowing each other up over who has the best invisible friend.

caesar963 other than the Polish stopping the sinister thread of Islam into Europe and the Russian role during WW2, Eastern Europe is largely inconsequential with regards to influencing the predominant culture - that of the West.
Had you attended a ‘proper school’ you would have the benefit of learning that we derive our culture from Greece and Rome with a splattering of the Abrahamic religions. East and West was divided as far back as the Greco-Persian Wars and hasn’t changed much as far as their political beliefs are concerned. The East embraces tyranny and the West embraces freedom. Western culture and civilisation is largely a consequence of the English speaking world, ergo Western Europe, and particularly Britain, is responsible for it.
The ‘rest of the world’ are all the people who arrive in the West, such as BLM supporters, recent immigrants and those living in other countries who enjoy discrediting Western culture whilst conveniently overlooking the fact that it’s Western liberty which allows them such absurd views in the first place.
If you wish to enlighten yourself with a classical education rmoor has some good stuff on Tacitus.

Couple points.
Almost all slaves exported from Africa were captured by other blacks during endemic warfare and sold to Arab or Jewish traders.
Only 5% of the African slave trade came to the America’s, most of it went the the Saracenic world which then promptly killed or sterilized their relatively cheap commodity thus resulting in none of these slaves producing a significant diaspora population in the Arab, Berb, or Turk dominated states of the near east.
Only 5% of the Transatlantic slave trade came to the territory that would become the United States.
Only after 1811 were the majority of the indentured, ie slaves, in the US non-white.
Jews in the United States owned 68% of slaves and constituted approximately 60% of slave owners. As well as accounting for all slave trading companies and auction houses, every single one. Thus despite being only 1% of the population at the time Jews were the majority of both slave holders and those who provided services that somehow involved slavery. This was also a pattern repeated in the Caribbean slave-holding territories.
And as numerous others have pointed out the economic contribution of slavery let alone the post-1811 black-dominated slavery was marginal rather than pivotal accounting for less than 7% of the economy at its height in the early 17th century when most of the slaves were white anyway.
The Jewish run New York Times contracts a dyed-hair mulattress to pen what is essentially a complaint about racialized chattel slavery in the United States, and ostensibly a complaint about whites. Despite the white United States having little to do with African slave trade in total(0.25%). And indeed if you read “A South-side View of Slavery; Adams” which was penned by an abolitionist, at least the Christian slave holders seemed to have subjected their blacks to what has to be the least harsh form of indenturment I have ever heard described as a general institution. Which is backed up by anthropological data collected from the examination of the skeletons of slaves which indicate decent living conditions in some cases superior to those of freemen in outcome. I cannot speak of Jewish owned slaves because Adams had no encounters with them. Still given the inferiority of outcomes for blacks in modern America even when each is subsidized the equivalent of 8,000 2010USD each year of their life and has been since the late 70s one must begin to question what “equality of outcomes” really means and how it could be achieved given varied material constraints. TLDR if you only car about “equality” blacks might by material measures have been better off under chattel slavery. Haha.
I however a genocidal imperialist whose forefathers never held slaves, not out of some moral compunction but because we killed the slaves(blacks in this instance) whom the Quakers brought to Western Pennsylvania and when they complained we killed them as well including their women and children for the impertinence of opposing our will. Essentially the most racist regions of the US did not have slavery because they would not tolerate the existence of non-whites at all or for that matter anybody who undermined the value of our labor. And still do not if I may give the game away a bit, look at the missing person’s reports in rural America outside of the South where blacks are much more tolerated.
Call me anti-Semitic, for I am. Call me racist because race is real and I accept that reality, but that doesn’t change reality to suite arbitrary whims of politicos at a dying publication that has to close its comment section for the fear of the sentiments I just voiced. The book is useful for illuminating the delusions of my enemies but little else its not even composed very well with its narrative jumping about.
Freedom of speech is only true when the sentiments most disturbing to sentimentality are expressed freely. Have a pleasant evening.

An ancestor of a good friend of mine was sold by King George because he couldn’t pay his taxes. For generation after generation, they had no hope of avoiding lifelong slavery unless they could somehow purchase their own freedom. I hope this book talks about such white slaves who have no hope of reparations.
Great men such as Thomas Jefferson fought against slavery in America before he even became president. George Washington set in his will for all of his slaves to be freed after his death. Jefferson was also the first president to express publicly his disdain over slavery. Abraham Lincoln as another great an who fought against slavery.

You should probably read it before you give it 5 stars. According to this historical revision, England tried to save the slaves in America, but the revolutionaries are claimed to have waged war to keep them. Utter nonsense.
