Exactly a century ago, intelligence agencies across Europe first became aware of a fanatical German nationalist whose political party was rapidly gathering momentum. His name was Adolf Hitler.
From 1933, these spy services watched with growing alarm as they tried to determine what sort of threat Hitler’s regime would now pose to the rest of Europe. Despite intense rivalry and mistrust between them, the spy chiefs began to liaise and close ranks against Nazi Germany. At the heart of this loose, informal network were the British and French intelligence services, alongside the Poles and Czechs. Some other countries—Holland, Belgium, and the United States-stood at the periphery.
Drawing on a wide range of previously unpublished British, French, German, Danish, and Czech archival sources, Spying on the Reich tells the story of Germany and its rearmament in the 1920s and 1930s; its relations with foreign governments and their intelligence services; and the relations and rivalries between Western governments, seen through the prism of the cooperation, or lack of it, between their spy agencies. Along the way, it addresses some of the most intriguing questions that still perplex historians of the period, such as how and why Britain defended Poland in September 1939, and what alternative policies could have been pursued?

One of the agencies opposing Hitler & the national socialists was Admiral Canaris’ Abwehr (German military intelligence).

More glorification of the most popular white male to ever live. Hitler will always be a hero to white men, this is why there are so many books, movies, tv shows, etc about this bastard. Why don’t white men let this guy go? Why do they keep reminding the rest of us about him? Is there something they are trying to tell us? Is there something about Hitler that white men miss and want to keep alive? Are there some opinions, ideas and perspectives of his that white men today still accept, relate to and want to promote? Why are we still hearing SO MUCH about this man several decades after his death? Why is he still so popular among white males? Stop and think about it…

I’ve never been able to find anything on what I think is a very interesting episode.

Well, he was constantly described as an intensely shadowy, private individual (nature of the job, I suppose). He & Abwehr always feature in general histories, in a marginal capacity (just reread Shirer recently, and he even pops up in Thomas Keneally’s Schindler’s Ark - Schindler was also in Abwehr) - and of course around the subject of the July Plot. I’m not aware of a specific book, unfortunately. In common with many (all?) in the military establishment, he had a great dislike for Weimar, and operated to bring it down. However, he then transferred that enmity to the national socialist regime.

A one time, Time magazine Man of the Year. Many people marveled at what he accomplished in a short time.
National Socialism was an answer to Communism. I don’t think it would ever work in a multicultural society.
A nation would have to have feeling of unity. That’s now gone forever in The West. Too many different races mixed together. We’ll be squabbling forever.

Hitler would have won…
England wasn’t ready for war in 1938 and Chamberlain gets an unfair press with the gift of hindsight.
Churchill was a bumbling over rated drunk as well….With anyone else in charge the war would have been over by 1944 at the latest, Britain would maybe not have lost the peace and half of Europe wouldn’t have been taken over by someone as equally bad as Hitler.
