For more than two hundred years, disturbances of the mind–the sorts of things that were once called “madness”–have been studied and treated by the medical profession. Mental illness, some insist, is a disease like any other, whose origins can be identified and from which one can be cured. But is this true? In this masterful account of America’s quest to understand and treat everything from anxiety to psychosis, one of the most provocative thinkers writing about psychiatry today sheds light on its tumultuous past. Desperate Remedies brings together a galaxy of mind doctors working in and out of institutional settings. Andrew Scull begins with the birth of the asylum in the reformist zeal of the 1830s and carries us through to the latest drug trials and genetic studies. He carefully reconstructs the rise and fall of state-run mental hospitals to explain why so many of the mentally ill are now on the street and why so many of those whose bodies were experimented on were women. Carefully researched, Desperate Remedies is a definitive account of America’s long battle with mental illness that challenges us to rethink our deepest assumptions about who we are and how we think and feel.

The history of psychiatry is a long list of egregious human right’s abuses. Labeling epilepsy as a mental illness. Labeling gay people as criminals. Recommending that alcoholics be sterilized. Recommending that children as young as six be sterilized because their parents were deemed feebleminded. Recommending that teachers lay the cane on young students who could not sit still in their seats. Recommending that newborns with Down’s Syndrome be put to sleep as soon as they emerged from the mother’s womb. Since it was standard procedure back in the day for mothers to be sedated during childbirth, newborns with Down’s Syndrome were quickly spirited out of the birth room and quietly given an injection of insulin, which killed them. The mothers were told that their child had been born dead and the child’s remains already cremated. Psychiatrists upheld and reinforced the status quo.The profession of psychiatry has still not apologized for the hundreds of thousands of humans killed at their instructions, some victims still alive and suffering today.

midcenturymoderne, I appreciate your thoughtful & thorough comment, but why did you only rate the book 1 star?

@apnea I wouldn’t bother him; he looks quite complacent brooding on his throne. And I would certainly advise against posting evidence contrary to his belief. Let the slumbering sleep, dear man!
Thanks @rmoor, this site has a good selection of psyche material.
