Unabridged
The complete unabridged audiobook of J.R.R Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, read by Martin Shaw. Captured from the audio cassettes at 96 kHz, noramalized to -3 dB with mild targeted hiss reduction, before being converted. Contains two versions, MP3 (44.1 kHz at 256 Kbps) and M4B (48 kHz), both chapterized. M4B is split into three volumes (same as the tapes).
Also includes maps and genealogies.
The Silmarillion is an account of the Elder Days, of the First Age of Tolkien’s world. It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them such as Elrond and Galadriel took part. The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-Earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor.
Included in the book are several shorter works. The ‘Ainulindalë’ is a myth of the Creation and in the ‘Valaquenta’ the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The ‘Akallabêth’ recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and ‘Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age’ tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, as narrated in The Lord of the Rings.

Now we’re Tolkien, zickrick! Never managed to get through this one in paper form - too many crazy names. Beautiful cover, btw.

The first time I managed to get through it, I did it by photocopying the maps and genealogies and spreading them out in front of me, and just referring to them constantly. I think once you have a grasp on the geography and the characters, it’s a lot easier to revisit and actually enjoy the narrative.

Grateful for the “precious” recommendations! This book is really the mythological spine of the trilogy. Unrelated fact: Tolkien used to come over to my alma mater for a couple of weeks every year to act as an external examiner of English. Well before my time, of course!

A lot of work but - no offense - this still does not sound any better than the 128kbps version I have (where from? I suspect the now unseeded old martin88-torrent).
I also wonder why you chose to encode in stereo and an insanely high 256kbps. The source is a mono recording, and variable bitrate with -0 or -1 setting will give you a transparent result with a fraction of the size…

Sample of the copy mentioned (first part of Valaquenta): https://workupload.com/file/T3PTa5vR
Is there any demand for this version (not VBR and stero too, but still about half the size)?

@Horstman No offense taken. I’m no expert or anything when it comes to encoding, and there’s undoubtedly bloat here. My idea was to offer it as high quality so that people can then do what they want with it. If they wanna compress it as far down as mono, 16 kHz, 32 kbps, that’s easily done. It’s just that too often I find that stuff I want is in lower quality than what I’d prefer, with no option for better.
I checked it against the other torrents, and they were either unseeded, not chapterized, or had clipped or trimmed the audio.
I did this as a project for myself, and I’m just sharing it on the chance anyone else has use for it. I won’t be heartbroken if they don’t.

A cassette tape rip, at 256 kbps? And then duplicated in both MP3 and M4B?
Well, if you want to bloat a torrent to 16 times as big as necessary for no better quality, that’s one way to do it.

I’ve got the book, in a box somewhere, so I’ll take the maps and charts.

This is indeed a nice encode. Thank you vry much @zickrick. I am sure much love must have been mingled with this effort.
I had this copy but could not make head or tail of the story for an hour or two. However, I intend to listen to this in order to get a deeper understanding of the movies.
Can we expect another ‘mono’ copy coming any time soon? It would be so nice @zickrick.

@Gweilo Hah, I literally only included the MP3s because I knew there are people out there who don’t like or can’t play M4Bs and I was trying to be considerate. If I knew 256 kbps was such a sticking point, maybe I wouldn’t have used that, but like I said–I’m no expert. This is literally only the second torrent I’ve ever made–the first was the NPR / Mind’s Eye Lord of the Rings torrent (though I got signed out and that posted as a guest), which was also a cassette rip. And I only posted this one because the official digital release has janked-up audio.
Again, just personally, I’d rather have a larger file size that I could shrink to my preference, rather than being stuck with something lower than I’d prefer with no better option. But I guess that sentiment isn’t widely shared, or else takes a back seat to storage capacity and/or bandwidth limits… Oh well, it’s a learning experience.
@X720 Not sure what you mean by “mono copy”. A re-encode? People are unhappy with this one, but would they want yet another torrent? Or do you mean something else?

@zickrick
For bitrates, some imagine that higher is better. But you reach the point of diminishing returns from a cassette source long before 256 kbps. Not to mention, if you encoded VBR you get same quality at half the size. And stereo is just pointless bloat on a mono source.
See https://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=LAME#Recommended_encoder_settings
– and that’s about music, not narration.
As for M4B or MP3: Please NEVER post both. Choose one, let downloaders deal with it.
People will only download the format they want (especially as the torrent is so huge) and thus fewer people will have 100% and be able to reseed.
It is trivial to convert between formats.
We have software sections in the forum all about it.
Not that it is necessary at all these days. There are apps for Android and iTunes that play either MP3 or M4B natively.
And if you do a Guest post, just login and repost the same torrent immediately and notify us in the forum and the Guest will be removed, though we notice dupes usually anyway.

@zickrick
I am sorry for being not clear.
“Mono” as in not stereo and with low bit rate. 32/64kbps.
And I do not think that people are unhappy because they have downloaded it and are downloading it. They just want to clarify that what should be the optimum bitrate for a cassette rip. However, I must say that they are saying that a bit tersely.
You have provided us an audiobook after putting a lot of work into it (chapterization, removing hiss etc)and, above all, it is free. So no one here has the right to complain. But since you a new uploader, they are merely trying to help (in their own way) so that your coming uploads are at par with the tradition.
I also am of the opinion that audiobook that has sound effects (full cast/dramatization) should be in stereo while simply narrated audiobook sound better in mono because speech sounds augmented and powerful when coming from both channels. It is also nice to have separate torrents for mp3 and mb4 as it just let people download the format they like or can play (as you have pointed out).
I loved the way you have put so much effort in encoding this torrent and am immensely grateful for that. I also hope that you would share so many more classics audiobooks with us.
Thank you so much for sharing.

@Gweilo & X720 Thanks for helping teach this old dog new tricks. I appreciate you taking the time to explain, and I will keep all this in mind going forward. (Also, I’ll have a proper look around the forum, which I’ve never actually done…)
Do you think I should delete this torrent and upload a (properly compressed) MP3 torrent instead? (Or just the M4B version?) Or should I just let this one stand?
I don’t know how much I’ll have to offer in the future–I’m mostly just digitizing my audio cassette collection. But I thank you again for your help.

@zickrick
Now it’s here and has people invested in seeding it, at least for a while, leave it up.
Do some other books and maybe redo this later.
Do listenng tests, don’t just chase the highest possible statistic.
Anyway, few monitor these comments regularly. Join and ask questions in the forum if you want to discuss and get input from other uploaders.

I’m a devourer of audiobooks, in whatever format, at whatever bitrate. My concern lies only in the fact that content got shared and that I return a fair portion of said share to my peers. Any other consideration in quality the creator/uploader makes for the listener should be taken with gratitude. Complaints and criticism that aren’t made in humourly jest simply have no place in a forum such as this.
Thank you for your time in creating this share, uploader!

This is certainly an intergalactic quality upload! Thanks for all the time and effort it must have taken!

Many thanks for this .. I am very happy you included a choice of formats .. personally, I have no issues using either M4B or MP3, or any other format for that matter, but I like that you went that extra mile to be as inclusive as possible .. working from what were not amazingly good first recordings anyway, and from cassette is always going to be an issue, whatever kbps you chose.
Thank you for all the extra content, too .. I already have the Silmarillion, both hardcopy book and audiobook, but I like what you’ve done here, so I am very, very happy to download your 3.28gigs to add to my collection.
So, good job, and once again, thank you very much.
