‘Starship Alchemon’ is a substantial rewrite of Christopher Hinz’s novel ‘Anachronisms’. I read ‘Anachronisms’ when it was released, and at the time I thought that it was very good, but not spectacular. Flash forward nearly 30 years, and Hinz has rewritten the older novel, with substantial changes that really do warrant a new title. The main plot is nearly the same, but the characterizations are better, and overall the story flows much more smoothly. It’s tough to judge a book when you are, in effect, re-reading it. You know the way things are going to turn out, even if you don’t remember the details. Still, I found myself drawn into the story and characters again, and highly recommend this for someone reading it for the first time, as well as for those who may have read ‘Anachronisms’ sometime in the distant past.
