“The first terrific thriller of 2023.”—James Patterson * “Spectacular…Taut, gripping.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) * “Reads like Apollo 13 underwater.”—Don Winslow * “Masterful.”—Patricia Cornwell
Flight attendant turned New York Times bestselling author T. J. Newman returns with an edge-of-your-seat thriller about a commercial jetliner that crashes into the ocean and sinks to the bottom with passengers trapped inside—and the extraordinary rescue operation to save them.
Six minutes after takeoff, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes and the plane is flooded. Those still alive are forced to close the doors—but it’s too late. The plane sinks to the bottom with twelve passengers trapped inside.
More than two hundred feet below the surface, engineer Will Kent and his eleven-year-old daughter Shannon are waist-deep in water and fighting for their lives.
Their only chance at survival is an elite rescue team on the surface led by professional diver Chris Kent—Shannon’s mother and Will’s soon-to-be ex-wife—who must work together with Will to find a way to save their daughter and rescue the passengers from the sealed airplane, which is now teetering on the edge of an undersea cliff.
There’s not much time.
There’s even less air.
With devastating emotional power and heart-stopping suspense, Drowning is an unforgettable thriller about a family’s desperate fight to save themselves and the people trapped with them—against impossible odds.

I shouldn’t be critical, because I can’t write a decent story myself, but this story may be pushing the bounds of suspension of disbelief a bit.
Aircraft aren’t designed to withstand the pressures of depth, so it would have a low crush threshold. In other words, even sitting on the edge of the cliff, it can’t be too deep in the water.
Grab the seat cushions and use them as floatation devices (they were designed for that) and let them carry you to the surface. Getting the bends would be the worst risk and a decompression chamber would fix that.

Maybe that’s why it’s considered fiction?

@SirDroid2112 - maybe you are correct, I might need a new hobby. I truly enjoy sci fi & fantasy, it’s a bit of escapism for me. As you already know it’s not possible going in, there isn’t the suspension of disbelief, so the story can be enjoyed.
But if an author is going to try and write fiction which resembles possible situations, then they should really investigate the material more. I get it, she’s a flight attendant, and authors are usually told to write about something that they know about. But this book’s synapsis sounds more like a bad movie than a good read (imo).
@Goomer, I appreciate you sharing though. If you and others enjoy the book, more power to you. Have a good one.

all right Disenfranchised, i guess some people have a harder time than others suspending beliefs for the sake of a story…
The story itself, maybe a 3 out of 5 for me.
i see where the author was going, but a bit too much created drama, if that makes sense
mostly entertaining, but not great.
again, ignoring certain facts for the sake of a fictional story
