Crippled is a damning indictment of a safety net gone wrong, and a passionate demand for an end to austerity measures hitting those most in need.
In austerity Britain, disabled people have become the favourite target. From social care to the benefits system, politicians and media alike have made the case that Britain’s 12 million disabled people are a drain on the public purse. In Crippled, leading commentator Frances Ryan exposes the disturbing reality, telling the story of those most affected by this devastating regime. This includes a paralysed man forced to crawl down the stairs because the council wouldn’t provide accessible housing and the young girl with bipolar forced to turn to sex work to survive. Through these personal stories, Ryan charts how in recent years the public attitude towards disabled people has transformed from compassion to contempt: from society’s ‘most vulnerable’ to benefit cheats.

never in the history of mankind have the disabled been treated better, despite this they are getting more and more demanding. this is ignoring just how many people are abusing the system.

Treating people “better” on history does not equal equal

if they were equal they would not require special treatment, they are not. im not saying every man for himself but there is a reason why so many healthy people are taking advantage of the system.

I don’t know if fall19 is from the UK or lives here but benefit fraud in the UK is actually very low and it is almost impossible to claim disability benefits even if you are disabled or seriously ill, never mind a chancer. Over the past 10 years the disabled have been used as a scapegoat, an easy target for the tories and the right wing press have aided them driving hatred and division in this country while we all suffer from the consequences of austerity and rising inequality. It suits many people to turn a blind eye to the suffering and imagine most to be “at it” but in work poverty in this country is real, many disabled people work and rely on assistance from the government to be able to do so.
Why not listen to the upload and then think again about your harsh attitudes?

so tell us, fall19 — how many people are abusing the system? can you give us precise numbers with sources? we desperately need experts like you to help us shed urgent light on this important issue. please, don’t let us down.

After the financial crisis hit over a decade ago, the reports coming from the UK in relation to treatment of disabled people were truly astounding and disturbing. The media had created a narrative of overwhelming benefit fraud - which was not borne out by the facts. It reached such a pitch that people in wheelchairs reported being publicly accosted, verbally & physically abused, called liars, and told to get up and walk.
People who do things like that - what the phuck is going on in their heads?

Thanks a lot.

people like fall19 astonish me. They would rather see disabled people die homeless and starving than risk someone getting something they don’t “deserve” (for their own, highly subjective values of “deserve.”)
The fact is that civilization literally began as a way to make sure everyone had sufficient resources to meet the needs of survival. Literally. That is the genesis of government, in fact; government started as the system by which a society ensured that an overabundance of resources in one part of the society got distributed to sectors where resources were insufficient to meet people’s needs, and to those who were too young, too old, or too infirm to provide for themselves.
One of the earliest signs of civilization is a fossilized skeleton with a healed leg fracture. Why is that a sign of civilization? Because it means someone took care of that person until their broken leg healed. And while I wasn’t there, I’m pretty sure nobody at the time whinged about how that person with the broken leg might be scamming the system.
Attitudes like fall19’s are, quite literally, inhuman.

@daenigma100: when filling in the upload form, can you please include the bitrate (read off from mediainfo, e.g.) and the narrator (usually announced at the beginning if not elsewhere documented).
Thanks

The Great British Gutter Press is always successful in turning the majority of citizens against the most vulnerable among their own numbers. There is a rapist still sitting in the Parliament with impunity, someone who made millions in financial crash of 2008-09 is our Chancellor of the Exchequer, an indolent philandering alcoholic drug addict is our prime minister and yeah, the disabled are “milking the system”! This country is well and truly being violated right under our eyes. Tory eugenics in action. Still people vote for them. That’s how mind control works. Wake up people! Austerity never works, never will work. It only kills. Austerity IS murder.

Boris gave up his US citizenship in irritation at finding out that he should have paid his large US taxes on the sale of his primary home in England; and his failure to report the sale in a timely fashion had resulted in fines. It’s all about the money, money, money…

As a disabled person I don’t care about being discriminated against, provided society legalizes euthanasia for me. Either meet my needs or help me die, this halfway BS wherein they try to blame me for my un-treatable health problems is just cruel.
August 12th, 2020
There’s no excuse, in a supposedly civilised country, for those needs not to be met.

Forget about discrimination. My wife(34) has Rheumatoid arthritis. She had 6 operations. Her 2 ankles and left hand wrist joints supported by metal plates. DWP assets every 3 years just in case her health get better. :/
