Editorial reviews
A fascinating intellectual history of the most prestigious prizes in the world. From their establishment in the will of the inventor of dynamite through their controversies, scandals, and political intrigues, this searching analysis manages to be both detailed and accessible at the same time. Performer Burton Feldman’s smooth tones make for an easy listen, and many listeners will enjoy the historical anecdotes and gossipy tidbits that enliven certain tales. The analysis of who did and didn’t deserve to win is especially interesting; Gandhi never won, for one thing, while the inventor of the lobotomy did.
Publisher’s summary
Founded 100 years ago by the inventor of dynamite, the Nobel Prize is the world’s most celebrated and controversial honor. It grants its winners instant celebrity and acclaim for “service to mankind”, despite accusations that it is too trendy, arbitrary, and narrow-minded. In examining both its fame and notoriety, Burton Feldman opens up the Nobel institution and process: how it originated, how it works, and how it is influenced by outside pressures (political, moral, personal, and academic).
The Nobel Prize is an extraordinary work that never fails to surprise, provoke, and entertain. This is the only book to explore every aspect of the prize: its founder, its aura, all its fields (literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, peace, and economics), and its laureates’ personalities and rivalries, as well as the Nobel’s controversies and blunders.

Critic reviews
“Feldman relates the lively history of the most prestigious merit awards in consistently engaging fashion, touring its century-long existence forward from the will of dynamite mogul Alfred Nobel…. Feldman chronicles the evolving preferences of the Swedish awarding committees (e.g., their favoring of particle physics over astrophysics) and their quirks, exemplified by the truly bizarre awarding of the prize in medicine to the inventor of the lobotomy. In pointing out such mistakes, the mediocrities who got prizes, and the worthies - Emile Zola, Edwin Hubble, Mahatma Gandhi, etc. - who didn’t, Feldman reveals the human side of the Nobels.” (Booklist)

*There is no Nobel Prize in Economics*
.
“Let’s debunk a myth. There is no “Nobel Prize in Economics”. On Nov 27, 1895, when Alfred Nobel signed his will, he left five prizes in alphabetical order to: chemistry, literature, peace, physics, and physiology or medicine.”
“It’s the most anticipated one. And yet it doesn’t exist.”

The scum-bag higher ups in that quasi religious pseudoscience cult of economics stuck their parasitic fangs into Nobels name and sucked as much legitimacy out of the Nobel foundation as they could without getting arrested. Any time you here them announcing so and so won the Nobel in economics - a theft is in progress. The Eco 101 cult has also pulled their parasitic act on physics by stealing parts of physics formulas and jamming in their fake numbers that they don’t even comprehend. The entire thing is just a priesthood to legitimize everything the overlords do no matter how bad they mess things up like in 2008. They did not predict that crash and all they said afterwards, while shrugging their shoulders, was “who could have seen that coming?” They have never predicted a single crash or recession. That’s why they stick them with the ’social science’ people on campus. That’s how the real sciences say keep away from us you charlatans.
They’ve been spotted kicking puppies too.

The Nobel Prize for Peace has become the No Balls Prize. Given to people based on political concerns, not actually doing anything for Peace. Obama is a prime example of this. Given the “peace prize”, in his first year in office, in 2009 for “wanting peace”. Such a sham!
Meanwhile, President Trump does not receive the Peace Prize even though he was responsible for The Abraham Accords, secured the first agreement to normalize relations between Israel and a major Arab country in decades, Trump’s ‘deal of the century’: Israel’s peace deal with 4 countries. Yet, no mention of he being considered for the Nobel Prize.
The Peace Prize isn’t worth using as a hammer to drive in nails.

@apollo60 you’re a clown! Looking at the middle east TODAY how have the Abraham accords benefited the Middle East? Openly bribing autocrats and dictators with technology and weapons that can only be used to surveil and oppress en masse does NOT deserve global recognition.
It has been argued by numerous experts that relegating the “Palestinian problem” which is what the accords accomplished is why the Middle East is a tinderbox today. Obama did NOT deserve his award but Trump would be more unworthy. When they start handing out awards for unintelligent, amoral, wannabe dictators who act like bulls in a china shop, Trump will be fit for consideration. Keep drinking the MAGA Kool-Aid my friend.

@apollo60 when your go-to for an example of someone being given a Nobel peace prize is Obama, and not Yasser Arafat, you’re kinda showing your bias.
Let’s be honest, you don’t care about the Nobel prizes at all do you? This is just another tangential topic that gives you an opportunity to go on a rant about whoever ‘the enemy’ is today.

Guys, Guys. Having a spat about the Nobel Prize [on which you have no influence] is silly. Spend your time on something else.
