The United States stands at a historic crossroads; essential to the world yet unappreciated. America’s decline in popularity over the last eight years has been nothing short of astonishing. With wit, brilliance, and deep affection, Ted Widmer, a scholar and a former presidential speechwriter, reminds everyone why this great nation had so far to fall. In a sweeping history of centuries, Ark of the Liberties recounts America’s ambition to be the world’s guarantor of liberty. It is a success story that America, and the world, forgets at its peril.
From the Declaration of Independence to the Gettysburg Address to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United States, for all its shortfalls, has been by far the world’s greatest advocate for freedom. Generations of founders imbued America with a surprisingly global ambition that a series of remarkable presidents, often Democratic, advanced through the confident wielding of military and economic power. Ark of the Liberties brims with new America’s centuries-long favorable relationship with the Middle East; why Wilson’s presidency deserves reappraisal; Bill Clinton’s underappreciated achievements; how America’s long history of foreign policy immediately touches on the choices we face in 2008. Fully addressing America’s disastrous occupation of Iraq, Ark of the Liberties colorfully narrates America’s long and laudatory history of expanding world liberty.

“essential to the world yet unappreciated”
This is a typical white, christian, american male attitude that only other white, christian, american males agree with… The rest of us really don’t want or need you… LOL
July 31st, 2023
Lost me at “Bill Clinton’s underappreciated achievements”.
What bilge! Widmer was a speech writer for Billy Jeff “BUBBA or Slick Willie” Clinton, The Predator-In-Chief
Do you need to know anymore?

If America wants to be respected by the rest of the world, it needs to send TFG to prison;- for a long time.
Italy singularly failed to deal with Berlusconi; and look at where that got them.
August 1st, 2023
What have you got against the BFG? He was Big, he was Friendly, and he was a Giant.
One of the greats.

This book is good……for starting camp fires & for emergency backup butt-wipe.
“essential to the world” That’s right Ted. When the US collapses where will the world get it’s porn?

Not everyone over in America is a white gentleman, as far as may be determined.
While Wilson, Clinton & Trump were pretty repellent characters, it’s the form of balanced constitutional govt that’s the operative point. That is of international significance. Consider the alternative, that the Western superpower was identical to the Chinese or Russian regimes.
As for the role - fairly indispensable when it came to being the Arsenal of Democracy; fighting the nazis; the Berlin Airlift; saving & supporting South Korea, maintaining it as a state; demilitarising & democratising Japan; defending Taiwan; supporting liberation movements in Eastern Europe; helping to defeat the brutal Soviet Empire; supporting the brutalised Ukrainian people; helping to secure & maintain the Northern Ireland peace process; etc. etc.

Only Caesar writes an objective comment. Kidus
August 1st, 2023
What’s objective about Caesar’s comment? It’s a clearly partisan and subjective one. On his usual prejudices.
America is the greatest threat to mankind in existence today.it’s a vampire state that feeds off the blood of the innocent and delights in spilling more and more.
Astonishing how some people love to throw the word ‘brutal’ about while ignoring the blatant savagery employed by their idols.
August 1st, 2023
You can’t hypocritically complain about prejudice, partisanship or savagery when you ignorantly support genocide & brutal imperialism - while also being a genocide denier & idolising despotic tyrants. I’ve seen the US secure & maintain peace on my own island, while imperialist savages - exactly like you - did their “best” to destroy it.
Hey, nitrolpost.
August 2nd, 2023
Well.Hypocritically complain, ignorantly support, brutal imperialism. Feeble tropes, feeble argument.
You never say, though you frequently allude to it, exactly what country you live in. Is it Erewhon? Practically every country in the world is hypocritical in one way or another. But your every reference to your current domicile implies it is Utopian. And I think there’s a reason for that.
Until you identify that country as many on here do theirs, you’re denying those who would gainsay you - me, say - a vital piece of information.
My country’s England. I haven’t hidden that fact. Nor that I detest the way it is so obeisant to the USA.
But at least when I argue, any statement I might make regrding its history and culture can be checked, and refuted if possible.
You on the other hand, make out you live in an ideal society and can throw stones with impunity cos you don’t have glass all around you.
Come clean for once. If you dare. You can’t be identified from a general location. What are you hiding? Where are you hiding? It’s an island, actually the better for American protection? Gertcha.
You mention hypocrisy. Yet you seem so hot on human rights only when they are being abused in countries whose ideology is unacceptable to you. The same partisan mindset allows you to believe, on comparatively scant evidence, any allegation made against the two countries you appear to despise, while looking the other way when your favoured country and its client states are involved.
I have expressed and continue to express doubt regarding the claims made against China regarding the Uyghurs. The claims are reported almost exclusively by interests allied to the USA. All of whom receive funding from the laughably titled National Endowment for Democracy. Most are unreliable witnesses with ulterior motives.
And America isn’t interested in human lives, or it would stop the carnage occurring as a result of its actions throughout the world today.
Your modus operandum is simplicity itself. Accept with
no critical examination anything that western propaganda tosses your way, and malign anyone who requires further proof or expresses a healthy skepticism. It’s the doublethink doublestandard double down philosophy and pretty transparent at that.
To read your comments, not an easy thing to do for sure, one thing becomes so obvious. That you believe the USA is infallible and morally irreproachable. The world’s sole moral arbiter.
That makes you a genocide denier, when we consider Palestine, Iraq or Libya or Syria or Yemen or Afghanistan and all the other millions killed by American foreign expansion.
It also makes you a supporter of torture regimes when we consider Guantanamo Bay. Or maybe a ‘torture denier’.
Abu Zubadayah has been, among other things, waterboarded (a cynical euphemism for an obscene torture) a total of 83 times. Protest that, human rights man. He has been locked in a coffin not dissimilar to an oubliette for days on end and is likely to be released only when he dies. He has lost an eye and has brain damage as a result of his treatment. But they won’t let him go.
On America’s ‘domestic scene’, it’s common practice, owing to the cost of healthcare and their lack of compassion, for people to abandon their elderly relatives on the streets so they may be picked up by medical services. Or not. They may not be noticed for all the fentanyl victims littering the sidewalks.
RFK has recently visited the US/Mexico border wall and returned with stories of people being flown by traffickers into Mexico from all corners of the globe, and being allowed to walk into the US unhindered. Stories of rape and child kidnap are rife down there, but America’s falling apart and has no interest in controlling its borders. Only in perpetuating an unwinnable war across the other side of the world which has caused over a hundred thousand deaths and an untold amount of money that would be better spent on its own populace. America’s a deep down, drawn out mess.
In Reagan’s heyday in the 80s he supported Guatemala’s death squad government which killed at least a hundred thousand of its own people. And nobody called it genocide.
Can you detect the scintilla of a pattern here? Anything familiar?
The US media kept shtum about that as they always do when told to, and as they still do forty years on, unquestioningly publishing allegations about unfavoured countries while ignoring outrages perpetrated by their own country and its clients.
America has 800 odd military bases all over the world. China has none and I believe Russia has one.
On those simple figures alone, even you should be able to work out who’s the most malignant, dangerous influence and force today.
Though I doubt you will.

Yet more of your repetitive falsehoods.
“never say…country you live in” - What are you on about now? I identified Ireland multiple times before - I make ref to it here also. So you’re clearly lying about this also. Prior to this, I described the enormous damage your imperial lot have done here specifically; the peace process which the US helped to secure & maintain - while imperialist savages - exactly like you - did their “best” to destroy it. Blocking all that out, eh, Wobbly1933? It figures that a salivating Brutish imperialist like yourself can’t even locate Ireland!
Whereas your national condition had to be dragged out of you.
“your current domicile (oy…) implies it is Utopian” - What straw man bullshyte is that? Where did I imply any of that? Ireland didn’t colonise any other country, is that what you’re sneering at? But we had Brutish imperialists like you here for centuries. Is that your “Utopia?” Anywhere your beloved empire invades, dispossesses & murders? Little wonder you slavishly support Putin & all the other despotisms.
“any statement I might make regrding (sic)” - Yes, all your weaponised lies, historical illiteracy, genocide denial & Putin prop.
“obeisant” - Switch off the thesaurus, you’re trying to hard.
“You make out you live in an ideal society” - Where did I do any such thing? When I said that it was an island that actually needed a peace process, & required its constant maintenance? Just how stupid are you?! A stupid liar, to boot.
“Gertcha” - You seem to speak fluent Ignoramus.
“hot on human rights” - This really riles you. Your “respect” for fundamental human rights being encapsulated in your frustrated phrase: “Human rights blah blah!” Brilliant.
“you hot on human rights only when they are being abused in countries whose ideology is unacceptable to you” - You clown! I consistently condemn the violation of human rights wherever such abuses occur. Including in Ireland - as mentioned. There again, your contrived falsehoods fail before they get off the ground. And you deny genocide. You utter ignoramus. That’s all you’ve got.
“you..believe, on comparatively scant evidence, any allegation made against the two countries” - Again, you offer no evidence whatsoever for your ass-ertion.
“your favoured country” - Again, I favour liberal democracy, the rule of law, & the fundamental human rights-based legal order. You detest all of these elementary norms, while also favouring Putin’s kleptocracy, brutal tyranny, imperialist invasions, power worship, genocidal ideology, torture, the Chinese regime, mindless con theories garnered from your Hate Sites, genocide denialism, & simple-minded propaganda. Those are the things I despise.
And no, your genocide denial (based solely on the discredited authoritarian prop site, Grayzone) is not “healthy skepticism.” Oy…
The human rights abuses, past & present, in Palestine, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, represent a moral stain. But somehow you carefully omitted the human rights abuses which you obsequiously support - those of North Korea, Russia, Iran, China (incl Hong Kong) - & you didn’t mention the brutal Russian invasion of sovereign Ukraine. Now why would all that be, Wobbly1933?
Once again, all you have is the decidedly non-distracting & ineffective “ButWhatAboutAmericaAgain?!” “AndTheHatedJeeewz?!”
You mock Ukrainian victims of rape, torture & murder, & you deceitfully deny genocide - denying all of that human suffering - on the “strength” of a discredited website! Why not finally “Protest that,” genocide supporter man?
In my days studying the ECtHR, virtually all the most egregious submissions & cases concerned crimes committed by the Russian & Turkish states. Why is that? Because these are control states. The system of government which you support, because “WhatAboutAmerica?” You haven’t thought any farther ahead than that, probably because you are incapable. You certainly give all the evidence of being an isolated, hateful, vulnerable person.
“perpetuating an unwinnable war” - Hang on, just to decode that: is that actually an obscure reference to Putin’s brutal imperialist invasion of sovereign Ukraine? Could you try to be a slightly clearer con theorist? What is Max telling you? Ought Putin be declared the winner, heinrich?
Given that it’s an unwinnable disaster, do you “think” Putin should then withdraw all of his imperialist armies of invasion & occupation? No, I doubt you do. You do so love a good Brutish imperial occupation.
“Obeisant,” indeed. But that’ll be your beloved class system again - so very deeply ingrained. Bowing, scraping, raping…
“unquestioningly publishing allegations abt unfavoured countries” - Is this a coded ref to the Holodomor, genocide, state slavery, concentration camps, torture, invasions, etc. etc? All those, uh, “allegations?”
“Can you detect a scintilla of a pattern here? Anything familiar?”
“military bases…Russia has one” - Ukraine?
“China has none” - But it does have Tibet. We could call that “a military presence.” And it really wants to turn Taiwan into a big base. Lots more concentration camps too. You’d probably regard the Uighurs & Hong Kong as prudent preparation for all that. That would be to your Social Credit. (Never mind, tankie.)
And, being the Arsenal of Democracy; fighting the nazis; the Berlin Airlift; saving & supporting South Korea, maintaining it as a state; demilitarising & democratising Japan; defending Taiwan; supporting liberation movements in Eastern Europe; helping to defeat the brutal Soviet Empire; supporting the brutalised Ukrainian people; helping to secure & maintain the Northern Ireland peace process.
Can you tell me where your beloved murderous dictatorships & genocidal ideologies achieved anything like that? Even on their best day?
However, human rights aren’t even on your radar, given that you’re a genocide denier, who idolises despotic tyrants.
August 2nd, 2023
Of course, you’re trying “too” hard.
August 3rd, 2023
It is such a tedious task, reading your lies and your hypocritical virtue signalling. Your ‘cherry pick ‘n’ chide’ routine is old hat by now but you’re a one trick pony who’s gone lame along with his arguments.
Just look at this, culled at random from your pseudo-sixth form rant:
Quote:’The human rights abuses, past & present, in Palestine, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, represent a moral stain.’
Oh? A moral stain? Is that all? That’s a pretty mild rebuke. You truly are a disgusting individual. (that’s a quote from guess who?)
And is there a responsible agent for this ‘moral stain’? Apparently not. It’s just something to get mentioned and move on from before it gets any real attention. Shame on you narcissist.
I’ll just bet that’s followed by a ‘but’.
‘But somehow’ - There you go. How predictable.- ‘you carefully omitted the human rights abuses which you obsequiously support - those of North Korea, Russia, Iran, China (incl Hong Kong)’
Did I ‘carefully omit’? Do I ‘obsequiously support?
Split infinitives are an easily imitated and revealingly immature feature of your irritating style. It’s as if the verb can’t stand on its own and you can’t splutter out sufficient fake outrage without having your hilarious little qualification hanging on to its coat tail. Leave the verb alone. I thought you Twained! Maroon.
But anyway, if I ‘carefully omitted’ then what did you just do with your ‘moral stain’, like the deaths of four million people were nothing but a minor spillage on an otherwise spotless record?
You don’t even mention whose hitherto spotless record, do yer? But we all know, and we all know you’re avoiding it. Carefully.
…..but we’re still on that same paragraph: Quote:
‘ - & you didn’t mention the brutal Russian invasion of sovereign Ukraine. Now why would all that be, Wobbly1933?’
And here we are, back on that same contentious subject with its same deceptive premise.
‘brutal Russian invasion’. You still hammer that bent nail as if somehow it’s gonna straighten itself into an unassailable truth.
Minsk agreements 1 and 2? 14 ,000 killed in the Donbass before Russia joined in? Such things mean nothing to a virtue signalling narcissist who makes a pretence of caring while ‘carefully avoiding’ anything incompatible with his asinine assertions.
Donetz and Lugansk were supposed to be autonomous regions while they were being bombed by Ukrainian Nazis. And in 2014 Crimea voted overwhelmingly to secede from Ukraine as the former two did last year. Have they no human rights? You don’t say so.
Try to think - hard I know - exactly what would happen if the Ukrainian forces took over those three states knowing the people did not want to be ruled by them. That, by any measure would be a bloodbath.
There could have been a settlement 100 ,000 deaths ago but fat fink Johnson and brain dead Biden vetoed an agreement already signed by Russia and Ukraine.
The delusion in this quote is pathological: ‘Arsenal of Democracy; fighting the nazis; the Berlin Airlift; saving & supporting South Korea, maintaining it as a state; demilitarising & democratising Japan; defending Taiwan;’
The Arsenal of Democracy? But you’re serious! Mein Gott.’fightine the nazis’.Yeeess. In your hall of mirrors version of history, America won the war, and Russia only threw its people into the fires without any sense of what they were fighting for and with no true notion of the great sacrifice they were making for humanity’s future. Like they were pieces of wood. You spit on their memory while claiming to be a sympathetic observer of history.
You are ‘carefully omitting’ the reality there, Narcissist, cos it doesn’t suit your case. 26 million died fighting the most brutal war machine of all time and yet it was the Americans wot won it. Hang your head in shame, narcissist.
So it’s Ireland, is it? Never read Your mention of that before, so I could hardly ‘block it out’.That you accuse me of doing so is just another instance of the waywardness of your mental processes. I haven’t done it, so accuse me of it. Still, it’s handy to know. Even handier to find out which side of the line you stand. Americans love the IRA.
And Wobbly1933 will it be now? Very well. Would that be the Nazi implication or the Stalinist? Only someone as wildly confused as yourself could claim I’m both. Whatever , I shall refer to you as Narcissist. That gets us both back onto the name calling, ad hominem groove these exchanges regularly adopt.
You’re a sick puppy, Narcissist. You’re no consistent condemner of human rights abuses as you so often sickeningly claim to be. (‘Sickeningly claim’. You must have written those two words together sometime.)
Indeed, you never bring up any reference to abuses in American client states unless you have no option but to mention them in passing on your way to howl at China or Russia.
Arguing with you is just to repeat the same things over and over again while you do the same.
You’ve completely ignored the modern day horrors of Guantanamo Bay, and made a reference in name only to Iraq where four million died at the hands of your ‘arsenal of democracy’ (who can take seriously a man who writes such phrases? Only someone with a personality disorder thinks people are taken in by such ludicrous tropes) By any stretch of a definition the latter qualifies as ‘genocide’,yet it’s just a ‘moral stain’ to you. A moral stain while you wilfully attach the label to ill documented claims by people funded by America’s regime change arm - the NED - and manage to fabricate outrage for events of 90 years ago. How much attention would the media give to human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain? How much would the NED pay for such stories?
Again, and I know this is useless to say because it’s got into your brainpan and there’s no dislodging it, but you really are an hilarious, soporific maroon for continuing to claim I’m antisemitic and that I mocked Ukrainian victims. I’m anti nazi, as my opinions on the Azov faction ought to ‘clearly indicate’. Not that such delicacies of meaning impact on your reasoning when they get in the way of a good insult. Go for it, Narsy. I love it.
I certainly mocked the western media portrayal of brutal Nazi Azov Ukrainians as decent and moral, when only a few years back they were claiming Ukraine was the most corrupt country in Europe and bemoaning the rise of Banderite Nazism.
Stepan Bandera. Now there’s a name. I seem to recall your being an apologist for that Nazi collaborator too. Now what that says about you is all that truly needs to be said. That is just the twisted way your ‘mind’ works.
August 3rd, 2023
And that’s you trying?! Scanned & noticed these particularly egregious hate bombs: “handier to find out which side of the line you stand…the IRA.
Your level of understanding: I’m Irish, so that equals IRA. That’s it. All your centuries of Brutish, genocidal imperialism, & because I quite appropriately oppose that horror, I must then support the IRA. That is some seriously twisted racial hatred, & goes very deep. It certainly confirms your profile as an isolated, bitter, vulnerable type of character.
You are genuinely, mind-bogglingly stupid, a supporter of imperialism & genocide - and a confirmed racist. How predictable. I can scarcely say that you finally let your mask slip here - your hatred has been there all along - but there we are.
I condemned the human rights abuses in Ireland specifically - which naturally includes all terrorism - encompassing your state terror also. The IRA & the British terrorists routinely attacked, tortured & murdered Irish people. However, given that you tirelessly demonstrate your racial hatred, & historical/political ignorance, you will not know anything of that either. Anything to “justify” your wet dreams of imperialism & genocide.
Everything you grope to express is likewise ignorant falsehood. You indeed are a disgusting supporter of your “righteous” human rights abuses & genocides.
And the language rules, which you struggle with here, are a legacy of 16th century Oxford Latin scholars applying fixed Classical linguistic regulations from a moribund language to a still dynamic one. As my English professors always affirmed, such rules are consequently advisory, given their fundamental inapplicability from one language to another. Yours is a routine error made by “those who do not know.” It’s also probably got something to do with your beloved class system, you mindless buffoon. It’s what you “think” your “betters” tell you! Hop to it, then.
Your linguistic incomprehension might go some way to explaining your appalling vocabulary, uh, “Gertcha.” What in the actual phck…
Utterly bizarre racist con theories abound in your nonsensical, demented ramblings & brain rot. At some level, even a character like you must be aware of this?
I ought not be encouraging you to incessantly repeat your hatefully ignorant, conspiracy delusions. If you were around during the Holocaust you’d be denying that genocide as well. And your Jew hatred reinforces that evaluation. This just amounts to gratuitously feeding your troll appetite, & the best advice from the moderators is to that effect. Aside from observing your rampant deceitfulness, historical & political illiteracy, hateful racism (as displayed) & your slavish support for imperialism, despotism & genocidal regimes. And slapping the ignorant shyte out of you…
August 3rd, 2023
Get to typing out your racist delusions, Wobbly1933.
