“This startling, vital book deserves our attention.” —San Francisco Chronicle
For listeners of War Dogs and Bad Blood, an explosive look inside the rush to profit from the COVID-19 pandemic, from the award-winning ProPublica reporter who saw it firsthand.
The United States federal government has spent over $10 billion on medical protective wear and emergency supplies, yet as COVID-19 swept the nation, life-saving equipment such as masks, gloves, and ventilators was nearly impossible to find.
In this brilliant nonfiction thriller, award-winning investigative reporter J. David McSwane takes us behind the scenes to reveal how traders, contractors, and healthcare companies used one of the darkest moments in American history to fill their pockets. Determined to uncover how this was possible, he spent over a year on private jets and in secret warehouses, traveling from California to Chicago to Washington DC, to interview both the most treacherous of profiteers and the victims of their crimes.
Pandemic, Inc. is the story of the fraudster who signed a multi-million-dollar contract with the government to provide lifesaving PPE, and yet never came up with a single mask. The Navy admiral at the helm of the national hunt for additional medical resources. The Department of Health whistleblower who championed masks early on and was silenced by the government and conservative media. And the politician who callously slashed federal emergency funding and gutted the federal PPE stockpile.
Winner of the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, McSwane connects the dots between backdoor deals and the spoils systems to provide the definitive account of how this pandemic was so catastrophically mishandled. Shocking and revelatory, Pandemic, Inc. exposes a system that is both deeply rigged, and singularly American.

I applaud anyone out to expose the crooks who who got rich off of COVID, but how anyone could blame capitalism instead of an unholy alliance of statism, corporatism, and cronyism (the exact opposite of capitalism) is beyond me.

@rustshackleford23 ?? corporatism and cronyism is how capitalism works.
e.g., Trump puts Kushner in charge of producing PPE. He knows nothing, he’s just his son-in-law. Kushner calls his corporate cronies to give out contracts, huge waste and fraud ensues.

Don’t know what you mean by “statism”, that isn’t how the US works.

I hate to disappoint you if you think I’m going to defend Jared Kushner. I’m sure you’re just as worked up about cronyism in the current administration; it is, after all, our current president’s and his son’s chief vocation.
What you seem to be talking about is called “corruption,” and nowhere in any conception of a free market is corruption not an evil; it impinges on every mechanism that makes a free market work. It’s why regulations and the criminal code exist, to the extent that they aren’t enforced by the same thieves benefiting from said corruption. You surely know this, or you definitely should before you put your heart into an anti-capitalist economic model that only puts more power in the hands of corrupt individuals…with even LESS incentive for them to abstain from rent-seeking.
Statism is the belief in or inclination to put more power in the hands of the state in just the way I’ve described. You don’t think it’s a massive coincidence that the leaders of countries with command economies, their families, and their friends just happen to be so fabulously wealthy, do you?

Statism would be regulatory bodies put in place to ensure that the worst habits of unchecked capitalism (such as corruption) aren’t allowed to happen.
No coincidence at all that the big businesses and politicians who end up caught up in corruption scandals tend to disproportionately end up platforming for deregulation.
Your definition of capitalism needs adjustednif you think those things are the opposite and not adjacent.

@rustshackleford23 So, Biden is corrupt? Sure, the GOP has a dozen committees generatintg soundbites, but no evidence.
Anyway, cronyism is a form of corruption, sure. Like hiring your family to work in the White House, while they earn hundreds of millions in foreign deals, and then billions after they leave, is corruption.
The problems you’re talking about are actually due to “autocracy”; “statism” with no checks and balances, like Russia or China.

Sick? Very few under 70 without big time health problems died. Scam. We got scammed. 95% hysteria.

Monday morning quarterbacks are some of the lowest life forms on the planet. If $10 Billion was wasted in spite of having good intentions (and really really bad management) ok, then you might find it instructive to go line by line through the $825 Billion we spend on Defense every year. That’s $8.25 Trillion every decade. Like clockwork. So don’t make me laugh about a “multi million $ scam” as though that’s something earth shattering or inconceivable in a nation of bureaucrats and lobbyists.
