Ronald Reagan is hailed as a transformative president and an American icon, but within his 20th-century politics lies a racial legacy that is rarely discussed. Both political parties point to Reagan as the “right” kind of conservative, but fail to acknowledge his political attacks on people of color prior to and during his presidency. Reconsidering Reagan corrects that narrative and reveals how his views, policies, and actions were devastating for Black Americans and racial minorities, and that the effects continue to resonate today.
Using research from previously untapped resources including the Black press which critically covered Reagan’s entire political career, Daniel S. Lucks traces Reagan’s gradual embrace of conservatism, his opposition to landmark civil rights legislation, his coziness with segregationists, and his skill in tapping into White anxiety about race, riding a wave of “White backlash” all the way to the Presidency. He argues that Reagan has the worst civil rights record of any President since the 1920s - including supporting South African apartheid, packing courts with conservatives, targeting laws prohibiting discrimination in education and housing, and launching the “War on Drugs” - which had cataclysmic consequences on the lives of Black and Brown people.
Linking the past to the present, Lucks expertly examines how Reagan set the blueprint for President Trump and proves that he is not an anomaly, but in fact the logical successor to bring back the racially tumultuous America that Reagan conceptualized.

A lot of folk seem eager to blame Ronald Reagan for his racism, his war on education, and his relaxed attitude to police corruption. What they need to remember is that without those things, he would never have got white Evangelicals onside, and these days they are almost the only voters still loyal to the Republicans.

Instead of “racism is bad”, I think it would make more sense to say that identity politics is bad. That’s something more specific than “racism” which doesn’t mean simply “everything” the way “racism” does.
Any time you’re setting policy for the advantage of your own group over other groups instead of setting a policy of indiscriminate justice for all then you’re engaging in identity politics and that’s wrong. Very specific definition, not prone to the absurdities of seeing racism everywhere.

Most things I encounter are not racist, in my perception at least. If someone cares to educate me when thy think I’m wrong about something being NOT racist, I am quite prepared to contemplate their point of view and incorporate it into my own if I am persuaded by their argument.

Listen to mainstream Leftists in regard to literally anything and they will say that the thing is racist every time. The only exception I have ever found is Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood occupies a metaphysically unique position in the cosmos as the only non-institutionally-racist institution to ever exist.

To be ignorant about racism and how it works is testament to a low emotional Q.
You can seem good and bad at the same time. Ted Bundy can be racist but kill only white girls. So is he against whites?
A father can claim to love, yet molest his daughter.
So, racism is an individualistic endeavor. It is not a Party based idea.
I for instance have been attempting to scrub the foundations of my bias and prejudice thereby dealing with person individually. If they hold party-oriented views, I’ll deal with them accordingly.
But aware of the enormity of the ignorance and hatred common people harbor towards strangers simply because…they were told to, I walk around on alert.
