The activist and TED speaker Megan Phelps-Roper reveals her life growing up in the most hated family in America.
At the age of five, Megan Phelps-Roper began protesting homosexuality and other alleged vices alongside fellow members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. Founded by her grandfather and consisting almost entirely of her extended family, the tiny group would gain worldwide notoriety for its pickets at military funerals and celebrations of death and tragedy. As Phelps-Roper grew up, she saw that church members were close companions and accomplished debaters, applying the logic of predestination and the language of the King James Bible to everyday life with aplomb - which, as the church’s Twitter spokeswoman, she learned to do with great skill. Soon, however, dialogue on Twitter caused her to begin doubting the church’s leaders and message: If humans were sinful and fallible, how could the church itself be so confident about its beliefs? As she digitally jousted with critics, she started to wonder if sometimes they had a point - and then she began exchanging messages with a man who would help change her life.
A gripping memoir of escaping extremism and falling in love, Unfollow relates Phelps-Roper’s moral awakening, her departure from the church, and how she exchanged the absolutes she grew up with for new forms of warmth and community. Rich with suspense and thoughtful reflection, Phelps-Roper’s life story exposes the dangers of black-and-white thinking and the need for true humility in a time of angry polarization.

Zorro,
Than you’re just as reactionary as she is. Just because something is wrong doesn’t mean it’s perceived opposite is right.
She went from being wrong about the Christian God being true to being wrong about liberal progressivism being true.
Double face plant.

I wanted to post some contrarian outrage about how someone or something about this is garbage or wrong but don’t want my reaction to be obvious or transparent. nan na nan na nan na na

If you watch her TED Talks on YouTube about her ordeal growing up and being part of the Westboro Baptist Church for most of her life, she then decides to leave it because of the abusive behavior within and the hatred of others, you may give you a different opinion about her and her life.
Many of the followers have left it including many Fred Phelps children and relatives. She is daughter of Shelly Phelps-Roper, who took over the leadership role after Fred was ex-communicated and later died in hospice care. She decided that cannot stay anymore because of the constant negative hateful talk every day. She had to start from scratch for being part of the terrible cult, especially getting her college degree and being deprogrammed by that cult. Therefore, I don’t believe that she is a double face plant.

No, actually I don’t even believe that that person’s story is real, if you pay attention everywhere yo go or look on TV or music or anything there is straight up mockery of Christianity, it an agenda to kill it and bring one world religion.

Zorro, as a Christian thinker and a conservative who knows nothing about Megan and her book, but knows a thing or two about cults, from study and experience, I have observed many who have jumped from the frying pan into the fryer. Such stories aren’t typically driven by a world agenda, but rather a personal journey, which often times involves hostility and criticism directed toward anything and everything even remotely connected to their past.

The fact that she once loved such a toxic organization means she has a personality disorder.
She quit the church? Who cares.

@ATPMolloy1948 Oh no. I won’t read/listen to it. She’s a hot looking woman. This is why anyone gives a shiet.
If she were a 250 pounder with bad skin, you would never know her name.
True story. That’s American Culture at work. Don’t blame me.

The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling podcast (highly recommended) brought me here. Now curious about Megan’s personal journey.
Kind seeders are much appreciated _/\_
