This recording is based on one that J.R.R. Tolkien made while staying in George Sayer’s house in Malvern, Worcestershire, England, in August 1952. Rejected by countless publishers, Tolkien had almost given up hope of ever seeing his 14 years in print. This recording revived his spirits. He sent the manuscript to Rayner Unwin, a former pupil who had become a publisher, with the overwhelming result that even during his lifetime, Tolkien saw three million copies of THE LORD OF THE RINGS sold to his reading public.
The last piece on Side Two is an unpublished poem, originally intended for inclusion in Part One of THE LORD OF THE RINGS, Book Two, Chapter VII, “The Mirror of Galadriel.”
As Merton Professor of English Language and Literature for more than a decade, John Ronald Reul Tolkien was recognized as an authority on Old and Middle English.

I’ve always struggled with LoTR, possibly because my first contact with Tolkien was through his edition of Gawayn (which has some of the best editing, and some of the silliest comments, I ever saw in an academic text).
But I recently came across Jonathan Coe’s idiosyncratic take on The Shire, so I’m about ready for a new attempt.
