The definitive work on Stalin’s purges, Robert Conquest’s The Great Terror was universally acclaimed when it first appeared in 1968. Harrison Salisbury called it “brilliant…not only an odyssey of madness, tragedy, and sadism, but a work of scholarship and literary craftsmanship.” And in recent years it has received equally high praise in the former Soviet Union, where it is now considered the definitive account of the period.
When Conquest wrote the original volume, he relied heavily on unofficial sources. With the advent of glasnost, an avalanche of new material became available, and Conquest mined this enormous cache to write, in 1990, a substantially new edition of his classic work, adding enormously to the detail. Both a leading historian and a highly respected poet, Conquest blends profound research with evocative prose, providing not only an authoritative account of Stalin’s purges, but also a compelling and eloquent chronicle of one of this century’s most tragic events. He provides gripping accounts of everything from the three great “Moscow Trials,” to methods of obtaining confessions, the purge of writers and other members of the intelligentsia, life in the labor camps, and many other key matters.
On the fortieth anniversary of the first edition, in the light of further archival releases, and new material published in Moscow and elsewhere, it remains remarkable how many of Conquest’s most disturbing conclusions have continued to bear up. This volume, featuring a new preface by Conquest, rounds out the picture of this huge historical tragedy, further establishing the book as the key study of one of the twentieth centurys most lethal, and longest-misunderstood,offenses against humanity.

A most necessary work - without which one can never understand the 20th century dark age. Also, the grim consequences of extreme ideology.

A peek into the “Socialist Paradise” under a monster’s rule.
“Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true”.
Wake up America, your Freedom is fragile. Especially under the Democrats.

@apollo60: your own Dear Leader this week called for his AG to hold show trials for his political opponents. Is appointing judges he hopes will prevent counting of votes. And he made gulags for immigrants. But you fear Democrats. I’m sure you spent the entire 8 years of Obama imaging that the was going to do all this.

Thank you for this reminder of the true face of “Socialism” in practice, rather than theory.

FFS guys, the kind of “socialist” programs the dems are calling for already exist in many functional western democracies. They somehow haven’t collapsed into that Stalinist nightmares that this book nicely details. There’s a simple lesson here: carefully regulated capitalism isn’t stalinist socialism, they are fundamentally different programs. Take a POLISCI 101 class online if you need a refresher on this basic point.

Ummm . . . somehow a history of any Soviet (which to a Russophobe = “Russian”) affairs written by an old-boy Cold Warrior in 1968 can hardly be expected to be objective, or even reasonably subjective, history.
For one thing, how could someone writing from outside the USSR in 1968 have enough documentary or other factual data to hand about any subject therein, much less something as sensitive and of such geopolitical import as this? Even after the revision his interpretations are widely disputed. I find no evidence that he was fluent in Russian (enough to read bureaucratic reports and such) nor that he actually searched newly opened archives for primary documents in Moscow. Ridiculous to suggest that someone that worked for the British Foreign Office in a propaganda unit can be accepted at face value when talking about anything Russian. The evidence that British elites viscerally detest Russia is abundant and extends over centuries now.
“Histories” written by one’s strenuous enemies might not stand the test of time very well.
More reasons to be suspicious of anything written about Stalin in the West are that his purges of Jews from the Party in the 1930s made a very powerful enemy with global media and propaganda reach. Funny how the numbers of people Stalin is said to have murdered escalate without seeming end - I have seen ridiculous numbers as high as 60 million!! Never with any evidence provided, of course. Just like the famous “6 million” that was never adjusted even when the official Auschwitz numbers were revised down from 4 million to 900,000 in total (including Gypsys, homosexuals, Poles and German political prisoners). What? Killing a million people isn’t bad enough?
Lets be clear, whatever else these kind of efforts are, they are not “history”. Unless it is in Churchill’s sense of simply what the winners write.
As for lessons that may be drawn from Stalin’s regime regarding socialism . . . only an American could be so deluded, or rather indoctrinated. Bizarre people, truly. Contenders for the most brainwashed population in history.

Again, some contributions continue to demonstrate why such great books are so crucial. Capital stuff, rmoor.

Thanks the only copy I had sounded like the narrator was in a tin can.
Echo, distortion and some voccoder effect which makes you hear in the background what will be said 3 second later.
hopefully it’s not that same version encoded with inaudible

Anyone read passed :
“Ummm . . . somehow a history of any Soviet”
in that lifesart dudes novel up there?
I’m sure is opinions are relevant.
October 17th, 2020
@dieeiervonsatan - Could be magical realism, with a very unreliable narrator. Deeply relevant.

@caesar963
I surmise that you likely lost Herr von Satan with that comment . . .

The commentariat are now comparing Stalin’s purges to basic welfare programmes.
Maybe the school system needs a little more funding.

@apollo60
You haven’t read it.

This is an excellent book. I think Conquest is extremely fair in most aspects besides the Kirov murder. Many of the points made in this book from the 1960s proved to be true or close enough to be surprising. Conquest’s book about the Holodomor being a Ukrainian genocide is the one that is ridiculous. Stalin persecuted Poles more then any ethnic group in his purges.
