Composed in four parts between 1883 & 1885, Thus Spoke Zarathustra is considered a literary masterpiece and the most famous work of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. The work is a philosophical novel in which the character of Zarathustra, a fictionalized ancient Persian prophet-like figure who leaves his mountain home to share his wisdom with mankind. Nietzsche presents in ‘Thus Spoke Zarathustra’ a goal for human evolution & self-overcoming, representing a person who creates their own values rather than following herd morality; a rejection of the traditional systems of religious morality & a vision of a new, higher mode of being, the “ubermensch (Superman),” one of Nietzsche’s most famous & controversial concepts.

Nietzsche still retained mental capacity & was involved in the publication of his works, 40-copies of the fourth part were printed at his own expense.

Note: The first three parts were initially published individually & later published as a single volume in 1887. In 1892, the four parts were published in a single volume as ‘Also sprach Zarathustra: Ein Buch für Alle und Keinen’. The first English translations, was by German philosopher Alexander Tille in 1896.
