On 24 February 2022, Russia stunned the world by launching an invasion of Ukraine. In the midst of checking on the family and friends who were now on the front lines of Europe’s largest conflict since the outbreak of the Second World War, acclaimed Ukrainian-American historian Serhii Plokhy inevitably found himself attempting to understand the deeper causes of the invasion, analysing its course and contemplating the wider outcomes.
The Russo-Ukrainian War is the comprehensive history of a conflict that has burned since 2014, and that, with Russia’s attempt to seize Kyiv, exploded a geo-political order that had been cemented since the end of the Cold War. With an eye for the gripping detail on the ground, both in the halls of power and down in the trenches, as well as a keen sense of the grander sweep of history, Plokhy traces the origins and the evolution of the conflict, from the collapse of the Russian empire to the rise and fall of the USSR and on to the development in Ukraine of a democratic politics.
Based on decades of research and his unique insight into the region, he argues that Ukraine’s defiance of Russia, and the West’s demonstration of unity and strength, has presented a profound challenge to Putin’s Great Power ambition, and further polarized the world along a new axis. A riveting, enlightening account, this is present-minded history at its best.

Another great contribution, mr p. Plokhy’s academic work is generally superb - on Slavic history, Ukraine, Chernobyl, etc.

Serhii Plokhy is pretty reliable.
His “Cuban missile crisis” book is also well laid out.
I’m curious to see how he treats an ongoing situation in this book.

yeah, normally I’d never read a book about an ongoing war. I’m making an exception for ploky.

From what I can tell by looking at the table of contents over half the book is giving the wider context to this war (soviet collapse, rise of resentment etc)

I was going to give a snide remark about the war still going on and books already coming out, but it looks like the book is about what lead to the war, and that is quite the different story.
Thanks for the upload

Interesting to compare and contrast these comments with the ones for Benjamin Abelow’s book on ABB:

I know I am in the minority here, but I really don’t care about a war between corrupt Russia and also corrupt Russia jr. (who was part of Russia until about 5 minutes ago). I might be interested if, as a result of the war, corrupt and illegal dealings by American politicians were to come to light on the world stage. Joe Biden being tried by the UN would be ****ing hilarious.

The Americans have done so many regime changes they have a Wikipedia regime change page. Whatever evil bad man cartoon villain de jour they all get the same evil bad man spin. Only the name changes.

**United States involvement in regime change**
.
“Since the 19th century, the United States government has participated and interfered, both overtly and covertly, in the replacement of many foreign governments. In the latter half of the 19th century, the U.S. government initiated actions for regime change mainly in Latin America and the southwest Pacific, including the Spanish–American and Philippine–American wars. At the onset of the 20th century, the United States shaped or installed governments in many countries around the world, including neighbors Hawai`i, Panama, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.”
“..the United States expanded the geographic scope of its actions beyond traditional area of operations, Central America and the Caribbean. Significant operations included the United States and United Kingdom-orchestrated 1953 Iranian coup d’état, the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion targeting Cuba, and support for the overthrow of Sukarno by General Suharto in Indonesia. In addition, the U.S. has interfered in the national elections of countries, including Italy in 1948, the Philippines in 1953, Japan in the 1950s and 1960s Lebanon in 1957 and Russia in 1996. According to one study, the U.S. performed at least 81 overt and covert known interventions in foreign elections during the period 1946–2000.

Yabut this time is different cuz…..tell yourself.
.
Once that propaganda takes hold in a human’s brain they rarely deviate from the embedded narrative even in the face of loads of evidence that illustrates beyond all doubt that regime changes is what the US empire does and Ukraine is just the most recent in a long chain of regime changes going back back to the 19th century. When the US empire is done using Ukraine they will walk away & never look back.
Plokhy has long been a champion of Ukraine, so he will have some bias (hard to get to zero) but he is a very through & professional historian.

@apnea
Man, you know nothing about Ukraine or the Maidan. Yanukovych wasn’t especially pro-Russian president and one of his pre-election promises was “the EU integration”. But then he decided that it would be nice to build such dictatorial and corrupted sh*thole like Russia. But nobody wanted to live there, so Ukrainians made their decision consciously in 2013.

@Apnea Yup, and now Putin has come out and said that their goal is to re-establish the Russian empire, which means taking back Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Bulgaria, and the rest, blame that one on America too

It’s funny how those who have defended Russias invasion of the Ukraine are Doubling down now that Russia and Putin have declared their goal is to “turn the calendar back” to the time of the Russian Empire by bringing all those countries back under the umbrella of the Czarist empire. The worst are those that spout out the phrase “American Empire,” but the moment Russia declares its goals to be re-establishing an Empire, you guys are silent. Guess that means your ok with Russia forcing its rule over 100+ million people by violence though huh? Then when these western European and North and South American nations, at the behest of the nations being attacked, supplies them with weapons to defend themselves, its the countries helping these nations to defend themselves fault huh? I mean it certainly CANT BE the murderous Russian leader who only cares about his legacies fault, right?

The Introduction baffled me (especially from someone who claims to be a Historian) “Russia abandoned the Minsk Accords” ….WTF?? Russia wasn’t part of either 1 or 2 Minsk Accords - Ukraine, The Rebels, France and Germany.
This ‘history’ (story perhaps?) was published in May 20233 - all of the main players admitted the previous year in November 2022 (Merkel, Hollande, and Poroshenko on record that they weren’t to negotiate)
Minsk 2; “Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted on Thursday that he had previously told German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron that the Minsk agreements were “impossible”, and he did not plan on implementing them.11 Feb 2023″
Introduction is the place where you correct the record just before you publish

@Eddiejbjr1882: A link to a video on that particular remark ? “Putin have declared their goal is to “turn the calendar back” to the time of the Russian Empire” as i have looked at FM declarations, have looked at Pravda, TASS, RT and nope, have nothing. If Putin speaks only with you … blink twice and another question: Is Putin with you in the same room ? Does he whisper to you to do bad things ? Oh God, i get it you can like or dislike people, countries and yada, yada but just saying BS that not even the famous Ghost of Kiev did not dare to say … its just lame.
