A bold, groundbreaking argument by a world-renowned expert that unless we treat free speech as the fundamental human right, there can be no others.
What are human rights? Are they laid out definitively in the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights or the US Bill of Rights? Are they items on a checklist—dignity, justice, progress, standard of living, health care, housing?
In The Most Human Right, Eric Heinze explains why global human rights systems have failed. International organizations constantly report on how governments manage human goods, such as fair trials, humane conditions of detention, healthcare, or housing. But to appease autocratic regimes, experts have ignored the primacy of free speech. Heinze argues that goods become rights only when citizens can claim them publicly and fearlessly: free speech is the fundamental right, without which the very concept of a “right” makes no sense.
Heinze argues that throughout history countless systems of justice have promised human goods. What, then, makes human rights different? What must human rights have that other systems have lacked? Heinze revisits the origins of the concept, exploring what it means for a nation to protect human rights, and what a citizen needs in order to pursue them. He explains how free speech distinguishes human rights from other ideas about justice, past and present.

Well, the right to life would be the true sine qua non right - the most fundamental, prior & basic right. Also the right to education - which would condition quality of speech. And then the right to an adequate standard of living. But yeah, freedom of expression.
Interesting stuff.

Modern day liberals who claim that “mis- and disinformation causes harm” never provide any evidence. We’re expected to accept that claim as an act of faith, as they themselves do.

@Thamus so if I spread misinformation around your town that you’re involved in a paedophilia ring, it wont cause you any harm? Good to know.

Still if you spread disinformation and expect compensation in a court of law you would have to prove malice. I’m ready for a national divorce already…. Geez

@Thamus Oh, come on! Jack_Milad is spot on.
It’s public figures that have to prove malice but private individuals do not.
Still, that didn’t stop the absurd allegations that the Sandy Hook slaughter of children didn’t happen. Didn’t stop shattered parents from having to put up with unconscionable phone calls and emails.
Some people trump out all manner of harmful disinformation … (bad pun intended)
Yep, I’m pretty ready for a national divorce too …

“The Union forever” they used say. They’d even inappropriately drop it into unrelated chats.
That’s disgusting about Sandy Hook. To exacerbate that kind of pain is evil.

Blow hards chant endlessly about ‘free speech’. But they’re only interested in the opportunity for themselves to shout about how awful everyone else is.
They have less interest in raising the voices of poor, minoritised, suffering people. Ensuring a voice for all is not their idea of freedom.

@Thamus “Modern day liberals who claim that “mis- and disinformation causes harm” never provide any evidence.”
So, people who believe in facts and proof are “liberals”?
You seem to have missed the million people have died from Covid in the US, at least half because they believed antivax or covid deniers’ misinformation and refused to take any precautions.
