#2. The Honourable Schoolboy [1977], 20 hours 28 mins
Following the Secret Services uncovering of a Russian mole Smiley is put in charge to rebuild the battered and demoralised service. We follow the exploits of Gerald Westerbury as he sets out to uncover the destination of $500,000 of funds transferred to a trust account in Hong Kong by the Russians. What is this money is for? There is cross and double cross by the main protaginists as there are several stories running in tandem. As Smiley plots he is under pressure from the Americans and the machinations of his own political masters. Does anyone know what is happening or who is planning what? What is Drake Ho, the Chinese industrialist, up to? Who is Liese Worth? Did Ricardo, a drug running CIA pilot, die in Laos? What is the role of Drake’s dead brother in everything? The hero of the piece is Westerbury. He is the old school spy, sent in as a journalist and left to run with little support. We see the efforts of a demoralised agency trying to rebuild and inject a new pride. (J.E.Parry)

As the story opens, a former agent is murdered outside London, after contacting the British Secret Service with what he claims is important information. George Smiley, once head of the Secret Intelligence Service and now in uncomfortable retirement, is summoned to clean up the mess. What Smiley discovers is a trail of clues leading back to a very old and dangerous adversary, Karla, his Russian counterpart in Moscow. The patient Smiley takes up a careful pursuit of the truth, a search that walks him back through his own long history in the Cold War, and the wreckage of a personal life ransacked by the demands and hazards of his profession. At the end of the trail may be an opportunity for a final professional bow, or a date with death! LeCarre’s unigue prose style and cynical cover of the espionage business were pehaps never better than in this novel. His anti-James Bond hero, George Smiley brings all his considerable powers to bear, and some of his surviving comrades come out for one last mission… (DSThurlow)
