We like to think of ourselves as exceptional beings, but is there really anything special about us that sets us apart from other animals? Humans are the slightest of twigs on a single family tree that encompasses four billion years, a lot of twists and turns, and a billion species. All of those organisms are rooted in a single origin, with a common code that underwrites our existence. This paradox - that our biology is indistinct from all life, yet we consider ourselves to be special - lies at the heart of who we are.
In this original and entertaining tour of life on Earth, Adam Rutherford explores how many of the things once considered to be exclusively human are not: we are not the only species that communicates, makes tools, utilises fire, or has sex for reasons other than to make new versions of ourselves. Evolution has, however, allowed us to develop our culture to a level of complexity that outstrips any other observed in nature.
THE BOOK OF HUMANS tells the story of how we became the creatures we are today, bestowed with the unique ability to investigate what makes us who we are. Illuminated by the latest scientific discoveries, it is a thrilling compendium of what unequivocally fixes us as animals, and reveals how we are extraordinary among them.

“.., but is there really anything special about us that sets us apart from other animals?”
Yes, sometime around 6-8 years of age, we realize that we & everyone we love will die.
Not sure that qualifies as special, but it is surely unique & helps to explain much of our foolish behaviour, like ‘Wokesters’ & ‘MAGA’ zealots.

To see how well Becker’s hypothesis panned out (very well) check out the 2015 book: “The Worm at the Core: On the Role of Death in Life”
by Jeff Greenberg, Sheldon Solomon, and Tom Pyszczynskiy (the TMT guys).
An audio version would be nice.

apnea,
Yeah, I’m reading the Beginning of Infinity now and he agrees… thinks all this talk of us not being special or unique kind of absurd. What other species is typing out their thoughts and sending them into the ether for everyone to see?
Of course, this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t value and try to protect the natural environment and other species.

apnea,
Its not a new thought, Heidegger mentioned it and a whole list of philosophers before him.
Chapters such as Symbolism in words and beyond words probably point out those differences.
In any case, the divide of awareness of death between humans and animals is still far from being clearly delineated.

Not new thought - agreed. I’ll wager philosophizing on death began with behavioral modernity & will go on as long as we’re here.
I’m impressed with Terror Management Theory because of it’s scientific approach & weight of evidence. Very clever experiments. It’s one of the most compelling psychological theories I’ve come across & I’ve come across many & many are flimsy and/or not reproducible.
I see TMT as complimentary to philosophe.
