The world is working exactly as designed. The combustion engine which is destroying our planet’s atmosphere and rapidly making it inhospitable is working exactly as we designed it. Guns, which lead to so much death, work exactly as they’re designed to work. And every time we “improve” their design, they get better at killing. Design is a craft with responsibility. The responsibility to help create a better world for all. Design is also a craft with a lot of blood on its hands. Every cigarette advertisement is on us. Every gun is on us. Every ballot that a voter cannot understand is on us. Every time social network’s interface allows a stalker to find their victim, that’s on us. The monsters we unleash into the world will carry your name.

Everybody gets it — war is not a bug, it’s a feature.
But designers are just implementing some corporate elite’s vision — no matter how inventively they execute evil they (typically) didn’t invent it.
The premise doesn’t make any sense, unless the author is arguing that no one should ever accept employment in projects contrary to the greatest good (which isn’t always obvious at time of inception).

There’s a lot to bash about modern day design, for instance it being the laziest excuse for planned obsolescence. But the most annoying thing about modern design has to be the obsessive-compulsive virtue signaling.

Haven’t read/heard this yet, but sounds perfectly reasonable to me, and I am surprised by the negative comments. This is not exactly a new argument. Decades ago, the architect & social theorist Paul Virilio pointed out (with more nuance than this publisher’s summary) that unintended accidents and effects are built into designs: plane crashes come with planes, nuclear meltdowns come with nuclear power, plastic nanoparticle contamination of our environment and water supply comes with modern plastics… This book also echoes points made by designers in the First Things First Manifesto (1964) and Emigre Magazine #49, The Everything is for Sale issue (1999).
