  This book has been proven to have numerous factual errors by Norman Finkelstein. Anyone interested in its content should consider these problems when reading/listening to Peter’s work and should look into more scholarly sources for a better understanding of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

  Immediately before or after reading this book be well advised to check its validity. I suggest you Google The Fate of a Honest Intellectual by Noam Chomsky. You will receive the added bonus of an incisive comparison of the general attitudes between American and British intellectual communities. Personally I smelt the proverbial rat just listening to the first two paras of the intro. The truth will set you free.

  Anyone using Finkelstein’s work should look into more scholarly sources. Here is a well written analysis from someone who has a PHD on the Middle East, and who has consistently shown a record of scholarship… Unlike the 2 mentioned above who have time and time again been caught in half truths and lies, one of whom couldnt even get tenure at a second rate University… http://www.danielpipes.org/1110/from-time-immemorial

  This is one of the best nonfiction books I have ever read and unlike Noam Chomsky and Norman Finkelstein’s work any errors in the large volume of evidence presented is comparatively minor. On the other hand, Chomsky and Finkelstein take inaccurate or intentionally misrepresented facts and use them as the jumping off point for books and every hater of the West can’t jump in to agree fast enough.

  Oh, and learning about Israel and the Middle East from Finkelstein and Chomsky is like learning first aid from Dr Kevorkian.

  Much of Finkelstein’s malevolent attack on FTI is wrong. He incorrectly adds 40k Arabs to Miss Peters’s projections of the number of Arabs who could have been expected, on the basis of natural increase, to live in the Galilee and Negev (what she calls “Area IV”) in 1947, and then accuses her of not accounting for them properly. He charges her with “falsifying” the Anglo-American Survey of Palestine of 1945-46 by claiming that it discloses tens of thousands of Arab illegal immigrants who had been brought into Palestine during the war when in fact (according to Finkelstein) it states only that 3,800 laborers had been brought in. Yet the Survey does list many thousands of laborers who were brought in under official arrangements or came on their own.”
  Peters was criticized for relying on different sources for establishing the Jewish and non-Jewish population in 1893, yet the Ottoman census had obviously excluded most Jews as non-citizens, while the figures cited from French geographer Vital Cuinet were likely close to the truth.
  None of these high-profile criticisms of Peters actually undermined Peters’ thesis. Arieh Avneri’s ‘The Claim of Dispossession’ further supports Peters’ claims “with regard both to Arab in-migration and to Arab immigration.”
  The Chomsky-Finkelstein-Cockburn mode of ad hominem attack proved particularly successful against Peters because the words “hoax,” “fraud,” “fake,” and “plagiarism” are so dramatic and unforgettable, as is the charge that Peters did not actually write the book. It didn’t matter that NONE of these charges made by Chomsky, Finkelstein and Cockburn were even close to the truth. All criticisms, even if taken at full face value, were minor at best - not reversing - and actually poorly supported accusations.”
