This is something I picked up from audible last year on a whim. While I can’t comment on the torrent itself, I can comment on the story in general.
On one level, I want to like this. On another, I want to despise it. I guess you can say it has it’s pros and cons.
The writing isn’t bad and the narrating is good. It obviously caters to a certain audience but I will say that I think the writer made some… smart choices that pleasantly surprised me when I was listening. You know how you can be watching a movie or listening to an audio book and you see an event coming… it’s like “Really, he’s going to do THIS?” And then the face-palmish thing that you just knew was coming happens and all can do is groan and feel embarrassed for the author? Well, there were several points where this happened here… EXCEPT the anticipated thing DIDN’T happen. Props for subverting expectation and delivering plot developments a lot more mature and thoughtful than what I saw coming. On the other hand… the pro/an(pick one)tagonist’s name… There is simply no excusing or forgiving that. I’m sorry, that alone is enough to remove a star.
However, at the end of all four books, I kinda wanted to know what happens next, especially with certain characters that you would have assumed would end up in MC’s (sorry, but the name is so stupid I’m not even going to type it out) ever-growing harem. And underneath, the premise WAS an intriguing one, if you can offer just a bit of suspension of disbelief. And it was genuinely fun to listen to, from time to time. So I suppose, all in all, I’ve got to give it at least one tendril… err, thumb up.
