Shortly before invading Ukraine in February 2022, President Vladimir Putin of Russia claimed that Russia and Ukraine were one nation artificially divided. In the previous year, he wrote an essay entitled On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians, in which he claims that modern Ukraine is an “anti-Russian project,” a monstrosity turning its back on its heritage and borrowing culture for the corrupt West. This assessment may ring true to many Westerners, many of whom are unaware of the aspirations to Ukrainian nationhood until it declared its independence from the dying Soviet Union on August 24, 1991.
The Russian Federation and Ukraine do indeed share a common heritage, but their history and culture led them along divergent paths. Many listeners might be surprised to learn that the historical center of Russia was not Moscow, but Kiev, the capital of modern Ukraine. In the 9th century, Norse traders and warriors, known as Varangians, settled along the Dnieper, Volga and other rivers between the Baltic and Black Seas. They imposed themselves–or, according to Russian folklore – were invited–upon the Slav inhabitants.
According to The Primary Chronicle, a history written by the Varangians themselves, they brought order to a troubled land: “They said to themselves, ‘Let us seek a prince who may rule over us, and judge us according to the Law.” They accordingly went overseas to the Varangian Rus’.… The Chuds, the Slavs, the Krivichs and the Ves then said to the Rus’, “Our land is great and rich, but there is no order in it. Come to rule and reign over us.’ They thus selected three brothers with their kinfolk, who took with them all the Rus’ and migrated.”

“Come to rule and reign over us,” - That might’ve been a Rus’ ruse.
Thankee kindly, Gooms.

The idea for “Ukraine” as a nation and separate language was invented in the early 20th century by papists from the Austro-Hungarian empire in an attempt to westernize what was then Novorossiya (New Russia). It had never been independent: it was part of the Russia empire, the Ottoman empire, the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, the Mongolian empire, and so on.
“Ukraine” was eventually realized by the Soviets for an administrative territory within the Soviet Union. If it weren’t for the Soviets that the current Ukraninian Babi Yar-denying Banderistas love to hate so much, there would never have been any Ukraine.

Damn it. I wanted to call the book fiction but someone already beat me to it.

Putinists have invaded ABB as well as Ukraine.
@Thamus You can argue the same for just about any nation on earth. They evolved, grew, split over thousands of years.
Being a part of an empire a centuries ago is no justification for the former ruler to declare ownership. Or all of Europe would have to defer to Rome. Or Paris, as they were part of Napoleon’s empire. Or more recently, Germany.
And Russia owned Ukraine centuries ago. That’s over.
Modern Russia is exactly as old as modern Ukraine, both were parts of the USSR, now they are separate nations.

@Thamus
Sorry, but I don’t see the “Russian Federation” entity on the 19th century maps either. This fantasy state was made up by Boris Yeltsin himself (so Ukraine is already 70 years older by your logic). And if someone’s state has such government titles as president or prime minister, then its medieval history is pure fiction also (because we don’t belive in the continuity of states, yeah?).

The majority of Varangians were from Sweden. If the crew who made the popular TV show ‘Vikings’ made another about Varangians, ‘Vikings East’ it would be twice as bad-ass.
Russia & Ukraine have much shared history & culture and are both nations in their own right.
Putin did not invent the myth he is pimping - it’s Stalin Soviet style gaslighting & reminds me of how if you fell out of favor with Stalin, you would be disappeared & Kremlin photo shopped out of history.
The fact still remains that Ukraine is an empire proxy puppet & the war began in 2014 with the American run coup [Vickey Nuland] that ousted Ukraine’s democratically elected leader because he would not be their anti-Russian puppet. All predictions from the West are fails. They lost….again and all it cost was an entire generation of Ukrainian men in their prime years. All those who cheered the war on, got vicarious thrills screaming for Russian blood, will now ignore Ukraine & move on to the one while Ukraine will keep bleeding until Russian victory. Afterwards Russia will help rebuild.
Anyone who actually listened to Putin for the last decade and a half knew that if the empire kept pushing NATO east war was assured, same as if the Soviets had Canada & Mexico agree to join the Warsaw pact and stationed Soviet bases there. The empire no long has the industrial capacity to make simple artillery shell for their proxy puppet’s little war & nor can they keep. The US empire & home nation have been hollowed out. Collapse is unavoidable.
