Justice Anthony Kennedy slipped out of the Supreme Court building on June 27, 2018, and traveled incognito to the White House to inform President Donald Trump that he was retiring, setting in motion a political process that his successor, Brett Kavanaugh, would denounce three months later as a “national disgrace” and a “circus.”
Justice on Trial, the definitive insider’s account of Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court, is based on extraordinary access to more than one hundred key figures—including the president, justices, and senators—in that ferocious political drama.
The Trump presidency opened with the appointment of Neil Gorsuch to succeed the late Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court. But the following year, when Trump drew from the same list of candidates for his nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, the justice being replaced was the swing vote on abortion, and all hell broke loose.
The judicial confirmation process, on the point of breakdown for thirty years, now proved utterly dysfunctional. Unverified accusations of sexual assault became weapons in a ruthless campaign of personal destruction, culminating in the melodramatic hearings in which Kavanaugh’s impassioned defense resuscitated a nomination that seemed beyond saving.
The Supreme Court has become the arbiter of our nation’s most vexing and divisive disputes. With the stakes of each vacancy incalculably high, the incentive to destroy a nominee is nearly irresistible. The next time a nomination promises to change the balance of the Court, Hemingway and Severino warn, the confirmation fight will be even uglier than Kavanaugh’s.
A good person might accept that nomination in the naïve belief that what happened to Kavanaugh won’t happen to him because he is a good person. But it can happen, it does happen, and it just happened. The question is whether America will let it happen again.

The fact that people think this is worth writing about proves decisively that we have no real problems in the United States, and need to stop bitching, moaning, and complaining about every little stupid thing that happens that has ZERO impact on the individual citizen. Liberal or conservative, it has nothing to do with you. These Washington suits all have their faces in the pig trough of tax surplus and whores and drugs and they couldn’t care less about constituents and laws and morals and ethics and common goddamn sense.

what was done to this man in the name of politics was vile and loathsome.

@DanielGlad: I must disagree strongly that putting Kavanaugh on the SC, “has ZERO impact on the individual citizen”.
It has a TON of impact on the individual, because the decisions the SC makes impact everything we hold dear in the Bill of Rights - personal privacy, individual liberty, the rights of free speech and free assembly, among others.
If Kavanaugh rules on decisions that tilt the court even more in favor of the politician’s corporate constituents at the expense of the individual citizen it leads to even greater inequality, stress, and instability for the 99% of individuals that do not have the means (money and connections) to be shielded from those ill effects.

The only downside of this book I see is Rush Limbaugh spent an entire segment of his show talking about it

No citizen should be put through this kind of witchhunt by either party against the other. Disqualify him by his merits (his stance on abortion perhaps?), but not with false narratives from a clearly fragile woman.
As of the end of the SC term the country continues to be pulled by activists judges and courts to the left. So why is everyone having vapors about “conservative” judges? The likes of Bork, Scalia and Thomas no longer exist.

Clarence Thomas exists, oh my lord yes he does, and he has something special for Roe v. Wade and Brown v. Board of Education. It is a good time to be a land-owning white male in the US. The next decade will roll back all the advances and pave the way for a Gilded Age that you’ve never seen. Three people own more than the remaining half of the US population? They’re all just a bunch of lazy sods - they’ve got to go out and get a job! Vote Republican.

SC Justices should be limited to 18 year terms.

@ssafe05 - 100% agreed.
In fact, any elected representative should be limited as to how long they serve.

What I learned from the Kavanaugh hearings :
#MeToo has transitioned quickly from “Listen to all women” into “Believe all women”.
Welcome to today’s feminism.

Would anyone know why I’m no longer getting a link to download by torrent? The only option I’m getting is direct, for which one must pay.
