The late Dr. Michihiko Hachiya was director of the Hiroshima Communications Hospital when the world’s first atomic bomb was dropped on the city. Though his responsibilities in the appalling chaos of a devastated city were awesome, he found time to record the story daily, with compassion and tenderness. His compelling diary was originally published by the UNC Press in 1955, with the help of Dr. Warner Wells of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who was a surgical consultant to the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission and who became a friend of Dr. Hachiya. In a new foreword, John Dower reflects on the enduring importance of the diary fifty years after the bombing.

drlovey is absolutely correct and a quick internet search can show you that the USA did indeed provoke Japan in the infamous ‘McCollum Memo’. Many Americans don’t know about this document and generally have no idea what their government and military are up to, but the rest of the world does.
Please research The McCollum Memo, here are some highlights:
“It is not believed that in the present state of political opinion the United States government is capable of declaring war against Japan without more ado”
and
“Completely embargo all U.S. trade with Japan, in collaboration with a similar embargo imposed by the British Empire. If by these means Japan could be led to commit an overt act of war, so much the better.”
There is also a great deal of evidence that the American military knew and had warnings that the Japanese were going to attack in the days before, yet refused to alert anyone, in order to make it look like a surprise attack and generate sympathy, which is quite easy to do in an angry, violent, vindictive and militaristic society like the USA.
