The God Argument: The Case Against Religion and for Humanism - A. C. Grayling

What are the arguments for and against religion and religious belief - all of them - right across the range of reasons and motives that people have for being religious, and do they stand up to scrutiny? Can there be a clear, full statement of these arguments that once and for all will show what is at stake in this debate? Equally important: what is the alternative to religion as a view of the world and a foundation for morality? Is there a worldview and a code of life for thoughtful people - those who wish to live with intellectual integrity, based on reason, evidence, and a desire to do and be good - that does not interfere with people’s right to their own beliefs and freedom of expression? In The Case Against Religion, Anthony Grayling offers a definitive examination of these questions, and an in-depth exploration of the humanist outlook that recommends itself as the ethics of the genuinely reflective person.

What I value most about Grayling is that while I almost always agree with his conclusions, he has a knack of deriving them via routes which make me very uncomfortable.
Another of your disquieting, necessary, posts daenigma100.

If humanism was genuinely self-sufficient, self-defining and self-sustaining, why would it have to be against anything? It should require no antinomy. Failing Grayling.
The inferiority complex & chippiness in humanism is explained by the fact that it cannot provide a grounding for objective moral values.
It does not have an independent source & system of ethics & morality. It is entirely contingent on Judeo-Christian tradition.

Y’all see that, right there? That’s just one more example of the reason for which I invariably check to see what caesar963 has to say. On pretty much any topic, at this point.
Thank you for uploading, daenigma100.

Intrigued! Thanks daenigma

daenigma100 has enriched my life so much. Eternally gratefully. A bit confused why someone, like caesar963 would comment on a book they haven’t nor ever will read. While modern Humanism sprung out of the Judeo-Christian tradition (just as Christianity was a response to the “failings” of Roman polytheism and the Judaism of the time) and may share some morality with your religion, it is distinguished by its lack of dogma and supernatural beliefs. As a Humanist, I don’t get my identity from opposing religion, but it was an important journey to ask the critical questions and come to my own beliefs regarding a God.

I reckon caesar has read enough of these books to express the sentiment that there are an awful lot of them which do indeed sell themselves, just as much if not more, on their alternative stance to religion’s traditional approach, than on their own arguments. Humanism is a fine and noble way to get there in any case. Bill and Ted movies work for me.

@Schuffelfusz - You’re very generous - especially about my garbled nonsense!
@banfijanos - Very true, enigma has uploaded a few interesting titles (always support dem enriching uploaders!). However, it’s not helpful to be entirely uncritical.
It’s also mistaken to assert that I never read Grayling et al. I have several of his titles on the shelf and have been reading him for years, therefore, I’m conversant with his conceptual framework, as they say. So I’m merely bringing some information for consideration.
Like you, I suspect, I remain fascinated by the area, and have been on something of a “torrid” voyage myself. I have an all-consuming curiosity concerning the subject of objective ethics.
Nobody’s manufacturing any new morality. How come those clever folks 2000 years ago got it so right? When we’re routinely “informed” that the people of the past are all uniformly intellectually challenged (because they obviously lacked broadband, which clearly makes us all super-smart)?
Christianity developed out of Judaism & Natural Law, with Platonism & Aristotelianism baked in. Greek (& Roman) polytheism was not determinative, as it was not a moral system. Humanism (very decent people) is merely a recent franchise operation, with some of the cool, metaphysical stuff deleted. Why not go to the source & wellspring? I think that it’s a rebellious moral phase on the road to enlightenment (teens define their selves, and construct character, in opposition to parents, teachers, perceived rule-givers, etc.). Authority needs to be challenged; this represents a significant stage of psychological & ethical development. As long as one reaches the point of universal love - no harm done!
Once objective moral structures decay in a people - well, take a look at the 20th Century for instructive guidance…and California…
@Rosco - You scallywag! It’s crucial to seek the most excellent, least heinous method of ethical procedure. Why not steal from the best? Other than the fact that theft is kinda unethical (they keep tellin’ me)?

We have profound problems with origins, generally! And endings - witness the ropey conclusion to Game of Thrones.

This is not rocket science.
The growing body of scientific evidence shows clearly that the universe had a beginning and was designed.
Design can only come from a mind.
To disregard the science is up to each individual, to deny the science is merely irrantional.
