Martin Lings’ biography of Muhammad is an internationally acclaimed, comprehensive, and authoritative account of the life of the prophet. Based on the sira, the eighth- and ninth-century Arabic biographies that recount numerous events in the prophet’s life, it contains original English translations of many important passages that reveal the words of men and women who heard Muhammad speak and witnessed the events of his life.
Scrupulous and exhaustive in its fidelity to its sources, Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources is presented in a narrative style that is easily comprehensible, yet authentic and inspiring in its use of language, reflecting both the simplicity and grandeur of the story it tells. This revised edition includes new sections detailing the prophet’s expanding influence and his spreading of the message of Islam into Syria and its neighboring states. It represents the final updates made to the text before the author’s death in 2005. The book has been published in 12 languages and has received numerous awards, including acknowledgment as best biography of the prophet in English at the National Seerate Conference in Islamabad.
Note: Dr. Lings made some errors in this book in regard to the marriage of Zaynab bint Jahsh with the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wasalam) and also in the Fath (conquest) of Makkah when saying some idols were not destroyed.

Just be aware of some shortcomings:
- The book offers no modern critique; miracles happen and in fact are unremarkable - it is very dated
- It provides few dates
- It has no views based on the last 100 years of studies
- It uses stilted anachronistic English when quoting people of the period; speech with thee, thou and the smiting of thine foes abounds
- This biography offers a standard synopsis of the life of the Prophet as told in the Quran, Hadith and Sira, however, it doesn’t include analysis of the historical setting or textual content of the sources. there are more discerning books by Watt, Donner, and others.
- It airbrushes out some of the meaner and darker moments of the prophet’s career.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

Thanks for heads up - good contribution all the same.

@Jarvix - It’s terrifying how close that quote is to the essence of Machiavelli (of course, we know the real culprit). It’s like evil moving through the centuries like a communicable disease.

It’s not an academic text. It’s a mythology compiled by Martin Lings “Based on the Earliest Sources”.

The chapters on humping goats was especially graphic and detailed.

As it said, it is “Based on the Earliest Sources”. It means, for the uninitiated, that the sources on which the book is based are around 1000 to 1300 years old. Now those who have have some familiarity with the books written around that time, would know that “critique” was not invented nor were the modern methods of cross-checking validity of claims (Al-Tabari, a Muslim historian was the first to introduce the later a few centuries later). All religious lore from that era is infused with spiritual importance rather than critical historiography.
This book is actually an access to primary “secondary” sources, so to speak. It purports to create a narrative “Based on the Earliest Sources”, which scholars can then apply “critique” to.
The most important aspect of this book is that it explain a religious personality within the norms, customs and belief system of the Arabian society of that time and, therefore, afford a perspective while the modern works either remove the personality from its era or selectively invoke the same to fit their narratives thus speak out of context.

@xX720 - Excellent job of providing objective contextual background.

To the commenter who criticised the book for its lack of concentrating on what he/she termed as the “darker moments of the prophet’s career”–any such episodes were no “darker” than any others faced by any of the prophets of God from Adam onwards. It is only the contemporary and irrational bias against Islam which strives to magnify what are seen as shortcomings while ignoring glaring lacunas in all other religions. It is simply open season on Islam these days. Bug that’ll pass in time as people slowly realise the truth and beauty of Islam.

I find it fascinating to think of Muhammad as a man having to contend/struggle with the society/people of the time. To get an idea of the smaller things that life threw in his way. A prophet yes, but also a man using his wit and intelligence in a world so different from ours. looking forward to hopefully finding some new insight into his struggles.

Martin Lings’ Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources is one of the most beautifully written and historically faithful biographies of the Prophet Muhammad. It offers an immersive narrative deeply rooted in the earliest historical records, allowing readers to step into the world of seventh-century Arabia and experience events as they were understood by those who lived them.
Authenticity and Depth:
Unlike many modern biographies that impose contemporary ideological filters on the past, Lings’ work remains true to the original sources. He does not attempt to reinterpret or strip away the essential elements of the story to fit within the limitations of modern secular historiography. Instead, he presents the early records as they were written, allowing history to speak for itself rather than reducing it to speculation.
A Balanced and Immersive Narrative:
What makes this book stand out is its ability to capture both historical detail and spiritual depth. It is neither an exaggerated mythologization nor a cynical deconstruction, but a work that respects the integrity of the sources. Readers are presented with an account that is both historically grounded and deeply meaningful, avoiding the distortions often found in revisionist retellings.
Timeless Literary Style:
Lings’ writing is elegant and elevates the subject matter with the dignity it deserves. His use of formal English adds a timeless quality, much like translations of classical works, making the biography engaging and immersive rather than dry or academic. Far from being a barrier, the language enhances the reader’s connection to the narrative.
A Must-Read for Those Seeking an Honest Account:
For anyone looking for a well-structured, accessible, and historically sound biography of the Prophet Muhammad, this book is an excellent choice. It remains one of the most widely respected and cherished works on the subject—precisely because it presents history as it was recorded, not as later ideologies would prefer it to be.
