Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Dale Maharidge has spent his career documenting the downward spiral of the American working class, and his new book explores the limits of the American dream in the 2020s. Poverty is both reality and destiny for increasing numbers of people in the 2020s and, as Maharidge discovers spray-painted inside an abandoned gas station in the California desert, it is a fate often handed down from birth. Motivated by this haunting phrase - “F–ked at Birth” - Maharidge explores the realities of being poor in America in the coming decade, as pandemic, economic crisis, and social revolution upend the country.
Part raw memoir, part dogged investigative journalism, F–ked at Birth channels the history of poverty in America to help inform the voices Maharidge encounters daily. In an unprecedented time of social activism amid economic crisis, when voices everywhere are rising up for change, Maharidge’s journey channels the spirits of George Orwell and James Agee, raising questions about class, privilege, and the very concept of “upward mobility”, while serving as a final call to action.
From Sacramento to Denver, Youngstown to New York City, F–ked at Birth dares listeners to see themselves in those suffering most and to finally - after decades of refusal - recalibrate what we are going to do about it.

America has been in decline since 1970 at least, the only reason things looked good in the 1980s was massive debt spending. The current focus on minority rights is to distract from the decline in the white middle class; label them deplorables/white supremacists and just ignore that decline.

They say “A holy place is never empty” — the left managed to expunge the Bible and prayers from schools in the early 1960s, and guess what rushed in to fill the spiritual vacuum (hint: new gospel and saints and priests and religion, masquerading as something else entirely).
“On June 25, 1962, the United States Supreme Court decided in Engel v. Vitale that a prayer approved by the New York Board of Regents for use in schools violated the First Amendment by constituting an establishment of religion. The following year, in Abington School District v. Schempp, the Court disallowed Bible readings in public schools for similar reasons. These two landmark Supreme Court decisions centered on the place of religion in public education, and particularly the place of Protestantism, which had long been accepted as the given American faith tradition. Both decisions ultimately changed the face of American civil society, and in turn, helped usher in the last half-century of the culture wars.” https://religionandpolitics.org/2012/06/25/when-the-court-took-on-prayer-the-bible-and-public-schools

Correction:
hint: new gospel and saints and priests and *quasi-religion*, masquerading as something else entirely

A recession is when your neighbor loses his job. A depression is when you lose your job. A recovery is when a politician loses their job.

Slash taxes, boost corporate welfare, let the rich get richer and the wealth will filter down to the middle and working classes. That’s been right-wing policy since Reagan, how’s it working out for you, America?

further to “guess what rushed in” —
“More than a hundred years ago, prominent Marxist Antonio Gramsci wrote: “Socialism is precisely the religion that must overwhelm Christianity. [Socialism is] religion in the sense that it too is a faith with its mystics and rituals; religion because it has substituted for the consciousness of the transcendental God of the Catholics, the faith in man and in his great strengths as a unique spiritual reality”. Equalizing an ideology with religion was pretty novel back then. However, Gramsci was talking about religion not as it is commonly understood — i.e., the relationship between God and men — but as a collection of religious attributes and rituals. In his point of view, socialism was godless religion, the cult of the messianic Marx.”

@analiam. I agree exponential percents. If you’re poor it’s because God wanted you to be that way, and you should just STFU and accept it. Or work hard for your ordained masters and maybe they’ll throw you two crumbs instead of one.

Some very wealthy American back in the early 20th Century said something to the effect that when a very small percentage of people have by far the majority of wealth and the so called middle class shrinks to almost nothing, the whole country will begin to nosedive in a tailspin and disaster will come swiflty.
I believe that not long after that prophetic announcement came the Great Depression.
Does anyone know who basically predicted the Great Depression?

seperation of church and state is needed now more than ever, and the fallacy that this was ever intended to protect religion from government needs to be put to rest with the rest of the american mythologies pushed by the right.
Government needs to be protected from the corrupting influences of religion. Full Stop.
