Also known as the Roman Elegies, Erotica Romana is Goethe’s literary tribute to human sexuality and eroticism. Written in 24 elegies to emulate classical Roman elegy writers such as Tibullus, Propertius, and Catullus, Goethe creates a lyrical work of art that has often been subject to censorship because of the erotic content.

Note: I happened upon this book while searching for a good narration of Faust. With its pornographic cover and a narrator who sounds like he is in a tearing hurry to catch his train while doing his very best to impersonate an IVR system, I felt this was too atrocious not to share. Download this abomination at your own risk.

He probably rushed through it because he was so embarrassed. Good to see the original cover approved by Goethe himself.
The search for Faust sounds tantalising!

It’s wildly inappropriate, isn’t it? Could they not have found something more tastefully erotic, if they were so inclined, to slap onto a book by Goethe. This looks nonsensical. And this appears to be the only recording of the work.
Unfortunately, the search for Faust has been fruitless.

You might get a lot of people downloading it who don’t normally read poetry, so it was wise to include the disclaimer!
Shame about Faust, Mephistopheles must’ve thwarted your efforts.

I’m loving your description, not downloading though just wanted to thank you for your brilliant description

Thanks so much for this:- I’ve been yearning to find out what the Roemische Elegien sound like in a half-way decent English translation for years.
Yes, they are embarrassingly awful:- but Goethe thought highly of them. And you won’t read Wahlverwandschaften, or even Wilhelm Meister, the same way once you know these.
Reading these poems - with great difficulty - in the original back in the day was probably what finally convinced me that the greatest German poet is actually Heine.
I’ve always valued that insight.

Thanks for this curiosity. Shame about Faust. My favorite is the Walter Kaufman translation. Would love to have a audio copy of that!
