End State: 9 Ways Society Is Broken - And How We Can Fix It - James Plunkett

Can we reverse the mental health crisis by getting rid of Mondays?
Is it time to stop poor people being poor by… giving them money?
Can we quell the fires of populism by giving young people a say in the future?
As the shockwaves of COVID-19 continue to spread, and as the smoke clears from a year of anger and unrest, many people feel forlorn about the future.
In End State, James Plunkett argues that this can be a moment not of despair, but of historic opportunity - a chance to rethink, renew, and reform some of the most fundamental ways we organise society. In much the same way as societies emerged stronger from crises in the past - building the state as we know it today - we, too, can build a happier future.
James Plunkett has spent his career thinking laterally about the complicated relationships between individuals and the state. First as an advisor to Gordon Brown, then a leading economic researcher and writer, and then in the charity sector, helping people struggling at the front-line of economic change. James combines a deep understanding of social issues with an appreciation of how change is playing out not in the ivory tower, but in the reality of people’s lives.
Now, in his first book, he sets out an optimistic vision, exploring nine ways in which our social settlement can be upgraded to harness the power of the digital age. Covering a dizzying sweep of geography and history, from London’s 18th Century sewage systems to the uneasy inequality of Silicon Valley, it’s a thrilling and iconoclastic account of how society can not only survive, but thrive, in the digital age.
End State provides a much-needed map to help us navigate our way over the curious terrain of the twenty-first century.

Oh I’m sure the republicans are going to LOVE this, and wouldn’t possibly dream of chiming in to tell us how “no, everything is perfect as it is ’cause I’ve got mine”.
July 28th, 2021
sadly there’s many who don’t want any fixes, for their own selfish reasons. we call them conservatives or republicans or simply assholes.
July 28th, 2021
Ah, the hubris of the left.
The arrogance of thinking they have all the answers.
Case in point; the big cities in the US having been run by Democrats for decades. Disaster.
You should keep your grubby, corrupt little fingers off things you don’t understand.
July 28th, 2021
@itasha Cheers. Absolutely proved my point that the moment a book explores the idea of people being able to live a happier, fairer, healthier and more efficient life that Republicans would immediately oppose it.
Is there really nothing in your life you think could be better? If so, then why the hell are you so bitter?
July 28th, 2021
Me bitter? Nope.
It’s the left that constantly screams and have temper tantrums. “Everything is wrong - we have to change everything! Do as we say or you’re an evil, bitter person!”
Lol
July 28th, 2021
Damn. That sounds bitter.
July 28th, 2021
@itasha oh please, nobody called you evil. Stop painting yourself as the victim you pathetic child.
July 28th, 2021
Their victimhood is all they have.

Post my comment, fckn censorship loving pussies.

Jack_Milad, it’s not worth it. There are none as blind as those who can’t hear, or sommat like that.
July 29th, 2021
@Jack_Milad
Oh, please.
Don’t be so sanctimonious. Epithets like evil, deplorable are par for the course. And the temper tantrums.
July 29th, 2021
@itasha if it’s par for the course then you’ll have no problem pointing me in the direction of one comment on this site where you’ve been called evil.
July 29th, 2021
Sure, if first you point to where I said that…
July 29th, 2021
@itasha
You’re the one making the claim that it’s par for the course that the left constantly call you evil. That’s a bold claim, so the burden of proof falls on you to support that claim with evidence.
Otherwise, why frame a conversation as if you’re being called evil if it isn’t something that’s actually happened?
Thing is, even if somebody did say you were evil because of your political statements, that person would be a fool. Anyone who makes those types of sweeping generalisations isn’t worth listening to.
Oh wait a second… sweeping generalisations… that describes you as well doesn’t it?
July 29th, 2021
Oh, this must be the democratic/leftist/ass lickers mutual masturbation focus group
July 29th, 2021
@apollo60 yeah, the Klan meeting you’re looking for is down the hall. Just past the vending machines.
July 29th, 2021
“Ah, the hubris of the left. … Case in point; the big cities in the US having been run by Democrats for decades.”
But the Democrats aren’t Left? Centre Right, perhaps, and even so, they’re still beholden to the same power structures as the Republicans.
July 29th, 2021
It’s fun watching the children on here play…
First, Jack_Milad draws a line in the sand with the toe of his Birkenstocks…daring any “republican” to cross it.
Then, itasha falls for the bait and the name calling starts.
Finally, Jack_Milad goes in for the coup de grâce with the ever popular and over-used Klan reference (which is pretty ironic being as how the KKK was a Democrat organization).
*sigh*…I would say “they grow up too fast”, but I’m afraid that would be a lie in this case.
July 29th, 2021
@grond2 You don’t understand irony.
Irony would be you attempting to use “the KKK was a democrat organization” as some kind of gotcha. When it was literally last year they were openly endorsing the Republican president.
July 29th, 2021
This seems it might be a good listen. Thanks to the uploader.
And BTW, how can anybody call the Democratic party leftist? The only socialist they seem to have is Bernie Sanders. And boy did he disappoint.
July 29th, 2021
I was shocked to read Dems being described as “Left”, same as Keith Starmer’s “Labour” Party in UK. Both sold their souls to billionaires and shady foreign powers decades ago. They are not Left and nor are UK/ US democracies. You live in oligarchies.

Hilarious

I have been reminded of two things from this thread:
1. Don’t drink and post.
2. Arguing in a comments section is self-indulgent.
