Emily Davis is well-known in Fairacre and Beech Green as her life-long friend Miss Clare. Both spent their entire lives within ten miles of their village homes. Both were village schoolteachers, inspiring affection and respect in several generations of pupils. Since retiring, the two friends have lived together in Dolly Clare’s small cottage at Beech Green. Their shared life, serenely companionable, is tinged with sadness only when they contemplate the prospect of one of them being left alone in the future. That sad day arrives, but if ‘To live in hearts of those we love’ is true, then Emily Davis and her like live on.
