What is democracy really? What do we mean when we use the term? And can it ever truly exist? Astra Taylor, hailed as a “New Civil Rights Leader” (LA Times), provides surprising answers.
There is no shortage of democracy, at least in name, and yet it is in crisis everywhere we look. From a cabal of thieving plutocrats in the White House to rising inequality and xenophobia worldwide, it is clear that democracy–specifically the principle of government by and for the people–is not living up to its promise.
In Democracy May Not Exist, but We’ll Miss It When It’s Gone, Astra Taylor shows that real democracy–fully inclusive and completely egalitarian–has in fact never existed. In a tone that is both philosophical and anecdotal, weaving together history, theory, the stories of individuals, and conversations with such leading thinkers as Cornel West, Danielle Allen, and Wendy Brown, Taylor invites us to reexamine the term. Is democracy a means or an end, a process or a set of desired outcomes? What if the those outcomes, whatever they may be–peace, prosperity, equality, liberty, an engaged citizenry–can be achieved by non-democratic means? Or if an election leads to a terrible outcome? If democracy means rule by the people, what does it mean to rule and who counts as the people?
The inherent paradoxes are too often unnamed and unrecognized. By teasing them out, Democracy May Not Exist, but We’ll Miss It When It’s Gone offers a better understanding of what is possible, what we want, and why democracy is so hard to realize.

It doesn’t exist. America is a constitutional Republic, not a democracy.
The UK is a constitutional monarchy, not a democracy.

@Robbie22 A constitutional republic is a form of democracy. It’s a representative democracy. That’s like saying a Beagle is a separate species from a dog.

Blockchain technology has the potential to get any government as close to a democracy as is feasible. While it is handy to see how “everyone” responds to a particular topic (or legislation), it’ll likely not replace representatives of the people to do as they always have. If Everyone has a voice, the question will become how we define Everyone.
The U.S. Supreme Court gave corporations the rights of individuals, at least when it came to 1st Amendment rights as it pertains to political contributions (and, of course, in none of the ways that matter like individual accountability). Some places allow undocumented people to have a say in local affairs but many do not and are openly hostile to the very idea and they have no say at all in national politics. College [University] students are having that problem now in some places, whether their voices count where they come from versus where they live. These areas seem keen on diminishing the voices of young adults, especially fueled by the idea of ‘woke indoctrination’ in higher education, so that the “real” peoples’ voices aren’t drowned out by theirs. The technology is coming to make these kinds of “debates” inconsequential so maybe the future holds a more democratic promise.

A democracy is when people vote for a party then that party or person does whatever they want for a few years and the people have no further say.

I agree about blockchain freeing THE PEOPLE of nations from the intermediaries who are the monied interests that have caused and continue to cause untold misfortune and instability worldwide.
However, if that blockchain is run by the state we will all devolve into a dictatorship as bad or worse than China.
I’ll assume you simply misspoke.
If any of our friends on here think that CBDC is good thing, I’ll ask that you reconsider or
at least concede that you wouldn’t mind living under something like CCP so that at least we all know what you mean by “freedom”

A democracy is when two wolves and one sheep, votes on what they are going to eat for dinner.

Columbia21 and Malachie520: I agree; our institutions are stuck in the 20th century, and that’s not only government, but banking (under threat now), science, education, and others. A recent upload “Let the People Rule” was quite good, but didn’t really address Blockchain democracy. I’ve also been following Radical Exchange and Plural Voting; it’s an important enhancement to democracy, I think. I’m also interested in having a close look at what Estonia is doing - but haven’t had time to do it yet. Any more sources, ideas, books? This is an important topic, as the quality of political leadership is just so atrocious these days!
