  Okay, this newer kind of LitRPG (deck building) is starting to become one of my fav kind of books. Someone also asked for more books like this so, killing 2 birds with one book on this one.

  Never heard of the author before but, people say it’s a solid listen.

  This has the worst first chapter I’ve encountered in a long time. It’s literally a detailed mechanics info dump. Chapter two is a sort of yu-gi-oh battle. Does it get any better later?

  Thanks for the upload!

  I couldn’t get past the first 15 minutes or so. The linear story telling was abandoned for some unknown reason, and now everyone wants to write the “edgy” and “modern” books. Yet they fail, because these are advance techniques, reserved for only the good and talented writers, who can actually use these tools correctly, enhancing the story. Yet here, this is a good example for this advanced technique which is abused to the detriment of the reader’s experience.

  The story starts with an utterly pointless and confusing “action” scene of catching a fish or something. Then it almost immediately derails into an absolutely dull exposition section, trying to establish minute technicalities of the world’s “natural laws” system.

  While the whole point of starting a book with an action scene or some gritty interaction with the world or other characters, is to create a momentum for the story from the very start, leaving the exposition to be gradually and concisely dispersed here and there. Here, on the over hand, the attempt to use this tool not only doesn’t produce a “warm start” for the story to launch it forward, but effectively produces a “false start” on top of the “cold start”, which only increases the frustration and confusion.

  Instead, starting or unexceptional writers should stick to the linear and conservative story telling: give a short exposition of basics (who, where, when), establish the scene and the characters, and start progressing the plot at an even pace. Of course, some scenes are more energetic, and some are more static, but they should flow one into another naturally.

  Also, first establish the location and the characters. Telling something about someone without any context, doesn’t produce any emotional reaction. There is a boy and there is the boy’s mother. I have zero reason to care about, or be invested in them, if I don’t know them, have no idea where and when they are, and so on. Characters are the core of any good story, while the world mechanics are just a framework. Establish the characters, their circumstances, and only then move on to establishing the world mechanics. And even then, stay away from exposition dumps, instead integrate them into the story.

  Lately I don’t even bother rating the books or commenting on them, since each new one seems to be worse than the previous, and it seems pointless to leave exclusively negative comments. After all, I see them as a tool to help others chose more easily a better read/listen. But if there are not better ones, then what’s the point?
