ABOUT THE BOOK
The first in a Series about the life of Julius Caesar, this is a fast-moving, exciting novel that believably recreates the atmosphere and environment of ancient Rome. Part fact, part fiction, it opens with the boyhood of Julius and his best friend, Marcus Brutus. Together, on the country estate of Julius’s father, they become educated, hard-fighting young men before violent and tragic circumstances force them to Rome. Here the friends marvel at the power and beauty of the capital city; Iggulden paints a realistic and vivid account of privileged Roman life and the characters who are to shape Julius’s future career. Almost immediately he becomes embroiled in political intrigue and power struggles, learning the important diplomatic and military skills that will later lead to his becoming one of the great leaders of the world. We see also the adolescent Brutus being shaped to play his tragic role. This is Iggulden’s first novel and there are sections that might have benefited from more detail and description. The most successful and entertaining chapters are those where he has sound historical fact to support his undoubted skills as a storyteller. In contrast, Caesar’s boyhood - for which he admits there is no written evidence - is somewhat lacking in the rich ambience that emerges later in the book. This minor weakness will undoubtedly disappear as Iggulden grows in confidence as a published writer. This highly enjoyable book is straightforwardly written but energetic and lively in style, making for an engaging read that will appeal to a broad range of readers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Conn Iggulden. “I was born in the normal way in 1971. I have written for as long as I can remember: poetry, short stories and novels. It’s what I always wanted to do and read English at London University with writing in mind. I taught English for seven years and was Head of English at St. Gregory’s RC High school in London. My mother is Irish and from an early age she told me history as an exciting series of stories - with dates. My great-grandfather was a Seannachie , so I suppose story-telling is in the genes somewhere. My father flew in Bomber Command in WWII, then taught maths and science. Perhaps crucially, he also loved poetry and cracking good tales. I’ve always loved historical fiction as a genre and cut my teeth on Hornblower and Tai-Pan, Flashman, Sharpe and Jack Aubrey. I still remember the sheer joy of reading my first Patrick O’Brian book and discovering there were nineteen more in the series. I love just about anything by David Gemmell, or Peter F. ABOUT THE READER
Robert Glenister (born 11 March 1960) is a British actor known for his roles as con man Ash “Three Socks” Morgan in the British TV series Hustle, and Nicholas Blake in the BBC spy drama Spooks. He is the son of director John Glenister and the brother of actor Philip Glenister, who plays DCI Gene Hunt in Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes. His ex-wife is actress Amanda Redman with whom he has a daughter, Emily, born 1987. He and his current wife, Celia Glenister, have a son, Thomas, born 1996. His sister in law is the actress Beth Goddard.
