A bold and entertaining exploration of the epic struggles of yesterday and today.
Blackshirts and Reds explores some of the big issues of our time: fascism, capitalism, communism, revolution, democracy, and ecology. These terms are often bandied about but seldom explored in the original and exciting way that has become Michael Parenti’s trademark.
Parenti shows how “rational fascism” renders service to capitalism, how corporate power undermines democracy, and how revolutions are a mass empowerment against the forces of exploitative privilege. He also maps out the external and internal forces that destroyed communism, and the disastrous impact of the “free-market” victory on Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. He affirms the relevance of taboo ideologies like Marxism, demonstrating the importance of class analysis in understanding political realities and dealing with the ongoing collision between ecology and global corporatism.
Written with lucid and compelling style, this book goes beyond truncated modes of thought, inviting us to entertain iconoclastic views and to ask why things are as they are.

“ongoing collision between ecology and global corporatism.”
Ha ha all the record smashing climate change jacked multi billion dollar disasters of the last 2 decades are love taps compared to what’s coming. Corporatism, like the puny weak ass humans who built it are going to go splat like a bug on a windshield.
Enjoy your goodies & what & who & whatever normalish time you have left you have - politics are unequipped to deal with what inertia is going to deliver. Anyone tells you we can ‘fight’ or ’stop’ climate change is full of it & if they truly believe it then they need some physics lessons - nonlinearity, reverse positive self reinforcing feedback loops & one of the most powerful forces in the universe…Inertia. Inertia’s a bitch & there ain’t no stopping her.

…the profits of doom?
We’d at least be better off if we could kill off all these evil, genocidal “isms” that seem to refuse to die - with their wars/genocides/famines. Murder is their USP, their single growth industry.

@Caesar
Start with the most evil and genocidal of your “isms”: CAPITALISM
March 1st, 2022
Uh, the Holodomor; the Holocaust; Mao’s Great Famine; the Cultural Revolution; the Cambodian Killing Fields; the Red Terror; the death camps, gulags & purges; the Ethiopian famine; North Korea; all of the genocidal slave states of the 20th century impacting one-third of humanity. Almost 150 million human beings slaughtered in just a few brutal decades.
Why do you ignorantly rush to defend these genocidal ideologies by trying to deflect criticism away from them? Are you too stupid to condemn them? Or is all of that inconvenient historical fact just “Fake Nooze” again? Wholly transparent ideological barbarians, mindlessly spitting on the countless victims.
March 26th, 2022
That Black Book of Communism nonsense has been debunked many times already, so only the ignorant and those operating in bad faith bring up all that stuff. But while we’re on economic systems killing people, why don’t we examine capitalism?
9 million per year die of hunger, when there’s enough food for everyone. That means that in just ‘a few brutal decades’ - why don’t we say three - capitalism kills 270 million people. And that’s before we take into account all the imperialist wars that happen because wealthy capitalist nations want to extract resources from everyone else.
Sheesh, back to looking for books I think. Reactionaries are so tedious.
March 28th, 2022
You had a really tedious reactionary response to the factual historical record there, uh, Mao22. The genocides of the 20th century have been debunked? By whom? In which works? Upon what evidential basis? Ideological wishful thinking does not operate as a magic wand.
Why would you so obviously lie, distort & seek to divert attention like that? When sleazy ideologues do that (routinely) it doubly victimises all of the human beings who were slaughtered.
So, the solution to the problems of the world is to mindlessly slaughter more people - in centrally planned famines & genocides (oh, I forgot, that’s all “Fake Nooze” all of it. Disgusting).

debunked as in it’s not simply an infantile reduction of “oh it’s because it’s communism” that the bad things happened.
Humans are not perfect benevolent omnipotent beings. Some pretty bad mistakes were done, and it’s easy to point fingers and judge with hindsight.
There was and is a lot of good done at the same time. the point is to not repeat mistakes by learning the why and how, things that won’t happen if we just close our eyes and ears and go “Llalalalalala it’s just communism, it’s what it does lalalalalala, don’t read anything about it it’s just bad, reading is bad, things are already the best they’ll ever be llalalalalala”

Worth listening to for its critiques of capitalism alone.

@caesar963
It would behoove you to take capitalism’s pulsating dong out of your mouth from time to time, if only to use some mouthwash.

^ I have no words lmao. This response is perfect
As for the book, incredible primer for new leftists–great for re-assessing the neoliberal hegemony and ideology we’ve been born into

@caesar963
9.3 million will die of hunger this year. Communism’s fault of course.
