The story of Christine Jorgensen, America’s first prominent transsexual, narrated trans embodiment in the postwar era. Her celebrity, however, has obscured other mid-century trans narratives. Their erasure from trans history masks the ways race has figured prominently in the construction and representation of transgender subjects. In Black on Both Sides, C. Riley Snorton identifies multiple intersections between blackness and transness from the mid-19th century to present-day anti-Black and anti-trans legislation and violence.
Drawing on a varied archive of materials, Snorton attends to how slavery and the production of racialized gender provided the foundations for an understanding of gender as mutable. In tracing the genealogies of blackness and transness, Snorton follows multiple trajectories, from the medical experiments conducted on enslaved Black women to the negation of blackness.
Revealing instances of personal sovereignty among Blacks in the antebellum North that were mapped in terms of “cross-dressing” and Black literary works that express Black men’s access to the “female within”, Black on Both Sides concludes with a reading of the fate of Phillip DeVine, who was murdered alongside Brandon Teena in 1993. Reconstructing these trajectories furthers our capacities to conceive more livable Black and trans worlds.

Is it not interesting that Black people in Africa did not participate in this but when they were exposed to western ideologies they began to act this way? Transgenderism is not tied to blackness or black identity it’s tied to American identity. Please differentiate.

@suckdeep100 Transgender people have existed all over the world for a very long time. It is not some new phenomena. There have been transgender people in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and probably Europe too (though I haven’t done much reading on transgender european history because it interests me less) for hundreds of years. In most of these places transgender people fulfilled a social and sometimes religious role, and were accepted and acknowledged by their communities. There are the Hijras of India, the nádleeh of the Navajo tribe in America(there are a lot of different names depending on which tribe you are looking at and what language they used I am only including the Navajo one for this comment but there were trans people in multiple tribes all across the americas, the english term is 2 spirit now), The Jo Apele of the Lango people of Uganda, The kathoey of thailand, The Okule and Agule of the Lugbara people of Uganda, and there are so many more all over the world these are just the ones that I have read the most about. They have existed being a part of their communities for hundreds of years even pre colonization so it was not a western thing that was brought over. In fact in many of these places when the europeans came and saw this gender variance they tried fiercely to repress it and stamp it out. With their colonization they brought their christian values enforced by their laws and guns and this actually caused a lot of repression to transgender people who previously were ok. So transgender existence isn’t just a new american thing. we have been around for a while all over the world
