Half a century ago, the United States overthrew the democratically elected prime minister of Iran, Mohammad Mossadegh, whose “crime” was nationalizing the country’s oil industry.
In a cloak-and-dagger story of spies, saboteurs, and secret agents, Kinzer reveals the involvement of Eisenhower, Churchill, Kermit Roosevelt, and the CIA in Operation Ajax, which restored Mohammad Reza Shah to power. Reza imposed a tyranny that ultimately sparked the Islamic Revolution of 1979 which, in turn, inspired fundamentalists throughout the Muslim world, including the Taliban and terrorists who thrived under its protection.
As zealots in Washington intensify their preparations for an American attack on Iran, the story of the CIA’s 1953 coup—with its many cautionary lessons—is more urgently relevant than ever. All the Shah’s Men brings to life the cloak-and-dagger operation that deposed the only democratic regime Iran ever had. The coup ushered in a quarter-century of repressive rule under the Shah, stimulated the rise of Muslim fundamentalism and anti-Americanism throughout the Middle East, and exposed the folly of using violence to try to reshape Iran.

One would fervently hope that politicians & shady agencies might learn from these grotesque adventures. That’s if they (or we) ever really pay due attention.

For what it’s worth, the term “blow back” was coined to describe the consequences of the Mossadegh coup. At caesar963: I once heard someone define “HOPE” as no more than disappointment delayed. That someone was my boss in the Air Force. Draw your own conclusions.

Kinzer doesn’t appear to be aware that Islam is divided into two branches; Sunni and Shia.
Iran is Shia.
Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram, and virtually every other jihadist group on the planet are Sunni, specifically the Salafist movement nurtured by US ‘allies’ like Qatar and especially Saudi Arabia, which is a power rival of Iran.
Iran, spearheaded by Soleimani, the general the US just assassinated, spent the better part of a decade fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
There’s something downright insane about suggesting that Islamic terrorism and anti-Americanism are being driven by Iran when nine times out of time they come from the Arab Gulf States, not the Persians.

@noodlezombie: To be fair, Kinzer spends much of the first third of the book detailing the origins of both Shia-and the schism with the Sunni-over the legitimacy of the fourth caliph as the first true successor to Muhammad. While ultimately a part of THIS story, it was the true cause of Mossadegh’s overthrow-WE, and the British were. I trained with the Imperial Iranian Air Force back in the 1970s when we had joint agreements with the Shah’s regime, and the coup was still very much a touchy subject. I had not heard about it until about it until an Iranian AF NCO started talking about it-after looking over his shoulder.
