After reading people rave about Andy Serkis' narration of The Lord of the Rings, I bought it during the recent Audible sale and started with The Fellowship of the Ring. I also have the books narrated by Rob Inglis as well as the BBC dramatization.

I am only at chapter 3, and so far, it's been great. I find this much easier to listen to than Rob Inglis narrated ones, and Andy Serkis certainly brings the words to life.

https://audiobookbay.lu/abss/emperor-of-japan-meiji-and-his-world-1852-1912-donald-keene/

Very interesting read on the emperor that 'oversaw' the transformation of Japan and established the emperor system again.

'When Emperor Meiji began his rule, in 1867, Japan was a splintered empire, dominated by the shogun and the daimyos, who ruled over the country’s more than 250 decentralized domains and who were, in the main, cut off from the outside world, staunchly antiforeign, and committed to the traditions of the past. Before long, the shogun surrendered to the emperor, a new constitution was adopted, and Japan emerged as a modern, industrialized state.'

A very interesting read on the post WW2 to the Americanization of the Vietnam War. The level of detail is awesome. It covers a period often overlooked - the French Indo-China War.

Thoroughly recommend it for history non-fiction buffs.

Been listening to V UK - Visitation - Big Finish, what a terrible book, the story could have been ok but the production and narrations are really bad and its been cut to 3 or so hours. Theres also breaks where the producer/writer not sure which explains things.
Definitely not one of my favourites.

anime.chap has done a good job with the upload and I have no complaints there...

Good tip. Thank you.

If you want more on that subject and beyond, take a look at these:

Currently reading https://audiobookbay.lu/abss/a-bright-shining-lie-john-paul-vann-and-america-in-vietnam-neil-sheehan/

I found that Sheehan's book a bit rambling and padded, even though it's mandatory reading for the subject.

Although just a vignette, John Paul Vann portrait in Max Hasting's Vietnam book is quite interesting.

In the Mountains of Madness: The Life, Death, and Extraordinary Afterlife of H.P. Lovecraft - W. Scott Poole
M4B  Shared by:ihophats
MP3 Shared by:Haru55

A very readable recent biography of Lovecraft, his life and also his influence on weird literature, games, movies, up to the modern day.
Poole often references the previous bios, with a sometimes jaundiced eye.

https://audiobookbay.lu/abss/tphe-haunted-bookshop-mysteries-books-1-6-cleo-coyle/

After finishing the last book of Laura Gail Black's Antique Bookshop Mystery series, I was looking for a new cozy mystery series. I've been very happy with Cleo Coyle's Haunted Bookshop Mysteries. I finished the first two, and am now listening to the third book, The Ghost and the Dead Man's Library. The unique wrinkle to Haunted Bookshop series is that the main character partners up with the ghost of PI Jack Shepard to solve cases.

Not that unique.
That was the premise of the British series Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) in 1969.

And Harry Dresden is aided by the ghost, Bob.

Anomaly by Peter Cawdron.
It reads like a classic hard sci-fi novel but is a new book.
https://audiobookbay.lu/abss/wanomaly-peter-cawdron-2/

The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman.
Very good Vampire story, good characters and twist.
https://audiobookbay.lu/abss/the-lesser-dead-christopher-buehlman/
*There's also a Full Cast version on the ABB but the original narrator is very good.

The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson.
A good YA mystery.

Just finished - The Keeper of Happy Endings.
Getting through the thick French accent (short sections mostly at the beginning) was challenging for me but glad I pushed through. Entertaining light novel for Young Adults. 3-stars.

Jerry Merritt

A well paced engrossing story with great dialog and satisfying finish. The second book by this author I really liked.

Still seeded as of today.

Another very good Stone Age book, "Shaman" by Kim Stanley Robinson.
Best known for hard SF, as his Mars trilogy, this is "hard archaeology" story, set in Ice Age Europe, 35,000 years ago.
The protagonist becomes a shaman, and paints cave art discovered in the Chauvet Pont d'Arc cave in France.

Thanks G, I downloaded. I like all his books. Smiley

I Just finished "Steel Guardian" by Cameron Coral.  It's a very unusual story. Not very deep or funny but the story, dialog and characters are good. I enjoyed it.

Books 2-3 are not available as audiobooks yet but the story ends well (no cliffhanger).

Jason Brant, The Hunger Series - 3 books.  Entertaining "Infected" post-apocalypse adventure. I liked the characters, dialog and story.  I'm not sure the torrents are still seeded on ABB so message me if you can't get them.

The Great When - Alan Moore
https://audiobookbay.lu/abss/the-great-when-the-long-london-quintet-book-1-alan-moore/

Alan Moore, best known for writing graphic novels like  Watchmen, V for Vendetta, in this novel does a very urban fantasy. Set in London post WW2, 1948, austerity, bombsites, crime.
A young bookshop assistant buys a book that cannot exist, and has to return it to the other London, where mythic archetypes  are real.

Lots of references to British occult and fantasy writers like Machen and Aleister Crowley, and we find that their fantasy may have been inspired by this alternate, dangerous, city, "The Great When".

The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson.
An interesting off beat story that seems to have no point but, maybe that is the point.
I enjoyed the telling of it.

B.V. Larson - Starfire (2015)

This was a good Russians vs Americans First-Contact scifi thriller. Ends nicely but would make a great series. Only one book so far (pub2015).

Book is in this collection: https://audiobookbay.lu/abss/bv-lmarson-collection-bv-larson/
