no rants about doing the right thing
no helping people unless they are his friends or it serves his goals

Look for "Grimdark" fantasy.
e.g. https://bookriot.com/grimdark-books/
https://www.goodreads.com/genres/grimdark

https://audiobookbay.lu/?s=grimdark

if you haven't  already, start with GRR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones).
Not all characters in that are  jerks, but most are in the "you win or you die"  game.
https://audiobookbay.lu/audio-books/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-game-of-thrones-george-r-r-martin/ and many other versions.

Jack Vance has quite a few amoral protagonists.
https://audiobookbay.lu/audio-books/jack-vance-collection-jack-vance/
e.g. "The Dying Earth", "Cugel’s Saga"
and the "tribute" anthology https://audiobookbay.lu/audio-books/songs-of-the-dying-earth-stories-in-honor-of-jack-vance-glen-cook-neil-gaiman-tanith-lee-paula-volsky-gardner-dozois-editor-george-r-r-martin-editor-and-author/

Glen Cook's Black Company: https://audiobookbay.lu/audio-books/glen-cook-black-company-compilation-glen-cook/

The word was inspired by the tagline of the tabletop strategy game Warhammer 40,000: “In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.”

The word might have come from them, but the idea has been around much longer.

Seconding all of Gweilo's suggestions and also throwing out Mark Lawrence's Broken Empire series.

You might also like Kel Kade's King's Dark Tidings series. That one's a bit weird as it doesn't really have the grimdark tone, and the side characters never shut up about how awesome they think the protagonist is. But said protagonist is also a total psychopath. So it might work for you.
