The author of the LAIDLAW trilogy, William McIlvanney, died nearly 6 years ago.

His 1977 "Laidlaw" novel has been called the first novel of the tartan noir genre, given its combination of humanism and police procedural.

When he passed away he was working on his latest manuscript - a prequel to Laidlaw.

McIlvanney's widow Siobhan had the script sent to Rebus author Ian Rankin to see if it could be finished.

The result is a new book authored by both men called The Dark Remains.
