Michael Moorcock is a prolific English writer of mostly fantasy since about 1960. He started as a teenager doing Edgar Rice Burroughs pastiches, then his own multiple series of fantasy, notably Elric of Melniboné. Several others, including Corum, Hawkmoon and Jerry Cornelius, followed. Moorcock tied all of them together into his own multiverse, long before Marvel thought of it. All the heroes were aspects of the "Eternal Champion", whose adventures often paralleled each other, and they sometimes encountered each other. He became editor of the magazine New Worlds and encouraged and contributed to the "New Wave" of SF in the 60s and 70s. Later he was acclaimed for his more literary works, like Mother London.

Elric of MelnibonéThe Elric stories, published intermittently throughout his career, were Moorcock's first consequential work. At their heart lies the albino melancholic Elric of Melniboné, a treacherous figure who is in a sense the minion of his own supernatural Chaos-inducing sword, Stormbringer. The tales comprise a sustained critique and parody of the Sword-and-Sorcery brand of heroic fantasy. The Elric saga was written over more than 60 years beginning with "The Dreaming City" (1961). The most recent entry “The Folk of the Forest” (2023). These were not written in chronological order. Moorcock revised and reordered and presented the stories in many different forms. We have two fairly comprehensive collections of the Elric stories: | Chronicles of the Last Emperor of Melniboné A set based on the 2008 Del Rey edition, in six volumes. Audio courtesy NLS.

von BekThe von Bek family are aspects of Moorcock's Eternal Champion. The two main von Bek novels are The War Hound and the World’s Pain (1981) and The City in the Autumn Stars (1986); thereafter, various members and generations of the Family von Bek and their curious relationships with both Lucifer and the Holy Grail began appearing increasingly in subsequent (and revised) works, although the name’s derivation can be traced back as far as ‘Katinka van Bak’ in 1973’s The Champion of Garathorm. | Von Bek: The Warhound and the World’s Pain Shared by:chrissyskindle
This is the story of Ulrich von Bek, a cynical mercenary who sells his skills as a soldier in the wars taking place all over Europe. After the particularly horrific destruction of a city in which he played a role, von Bek decides to desert the military company he was working for and travel alone for a while before seeking further employment.
On his solo journey, he happens upon a castle where he takes refuge with—and then falls in love with—the keeper of the castle, the beautiful Sabrina. It is in this castle that he meets Lucifer, the master of Hell, and finds out that his soul is already destined for Hell. And so, in exchange for his soul, von Bek agrees to go on a quest for Lucifer, namely to find the Cure for the World’s Pain. This quest is also known as the Search for the Holy Grail.
As von Bek travels around Europe on his impossible quest, he will find himself caught up in wars, politics, intrigue, and romance. But he can never forget his purpose—or the terrible bargain he has made with the devil… | | Von Bek: The City in the Autumn Stars Shared by:chrissyskindle
Fleeing from Paris and the Reign of Terror in 1793, Manfred von Bek once a valued revolutionary heads towards Switzerland and then onto Mirenburg in Waldenstein, the seat of the von Bek family.
Shortly after crossing the border, von Bek meets Libussa, the Duchess of Crete, who assists him in escaping from a tricky situation of mistaken identity, and von Bek becomes smitten with her.
Intending to follow Libussa, von Bek meets the Chevalier de St Odhran, an aeronaut and confidence man. After several unsavory adventures, the pair decide that they must flee Mirenburg, via airship. On the night of the escape, two mysterious figures board the ship, Libussa and the man who tried to murder Ulrich von Bek over one hundred years ago. The four of them form an alliance while in route to the City in the Autumn Stars where a meeting with Lucifer awaits von Bek and his companions as they continue his family’s quest to find the Holy Grail. |

CorumCorum is another aspect of the Eternal Champion, who lived during an age before recorded history, when human beings are rising on Earth and beginning to war with the planet's older societies. Corum's race, the Vadhagh, understands advanced science regarding the nature of reality. They are able to perceive and even shift through different dimensional planes for different purposes. The primitive humans of the age mistake these scientific tricks for sorcery and believe the Vadhagh engage in demonic rituals and witchcraft. Corum's people become complacent and ignorant of the world around them. As a result, they are taken by surprise when a human tribe hunts them down and slaughters them. The last survivor as far as he knows, Corum is tortured and mutilated by the human barbarians, losing an eye and a hand before he escapes. He wants vengeance against all humanity, but later learns humans make up many societies of different beliefs and moralities. After encountering sorcerers and god-like beings, Corum learns all reality is influenced by the forces of Chaos and Law. Corum dedicates himself to maintaining balance between both forces, as disaster and death occur if either side holds too much influence. | Corum (1-6 Series Set) Shared by:Graphic_Audio Corum's story spans 6 novels in two trilogies:
The Swords trilogy: The Knight of the Swords (1971) The Queen of the Swords (1971) The King of the Swords (1971)
The Silver Hand trilogy: The Bull and the Spear (1973) The Oak and the Ram (1973) The Sword and the Stallion (1974)
