The Rig Veda (Sagar Arya, Narrator) 2020
Often appearing as Ṛgveda, the oldest of the four sacred books linked to Hinduism, it was composed in an ancient form of Sanskrit about 1500 BCE. The Rig Veda (Sanskrit: The Knowledge of Verses) was preserved in secrecy by ancient clans, initially orally, before it was written down about 300 BCE.
These 1028 poems, grouped as 10 ‘Circles’ (mandalas), have variously been called hymns, poems or songs by Sanskrit scholars. The Rik (so pronounced by the ancient Angirases clans, or Seer-Priest families) was an experiment with sound. The emphasis is always on sounding the words perfectly. The focus tends to be on the ideas rather than on the authors in Vedic literature, they are largely religious in nature, reflecting the world view and spiritual preoccupations of ancient India.
Like the Homeric epics, portions were composed during different periods in the north-western region of present-day India and Pakistan. That any of these verses have entered modern day usage is in itself extraordinary. No Hindu wedding is performed without reference to the Suryasukta, the model marriage of the Sun to the daughter of the Moon (Book 10, hymn 85). In India today certain surnames denote whether a family has a Vedic link, Dwivedi (knowledge of two vedas) Trivedi (three), Chaturvedi (four) among other Vedic linked ancestral roots. Very, very few had open access to this the Secret most Magical Veda.
The writers or composers of the Vedic verses were essentially storytellers. Once they had told their stories enough times they began to believe in the mythology they had woven to explain the vagaries of the universe. The sudden flood, the torrential downpour, the landslides that killed life-giving cattle and the forest fires that consumed all it touched, the quaking earth or sudden drought, all of which disarrayed an agrarian community.
This present translation is based on the first poetic version in the English language by Ralph T. Griffith (1896) and revised and modernised for this Ukemi recording. The more explicitly worded verses (avoided by Griffith!) have been newly translated by Anwesha Arya to make this Rig Veda complete, as it was meant to be chanted and heard. Translator Anwesha Arya comes from within the tradition of Rgvedic priests. Sagar Arya reads expertly, responding to the varying character of the verses and observing, in spirit, the ritual background of The Rig Veda.

Thanks a lot.

The Rigveda, generally considered the earliest of four collections of sacred utterances, assembled probably well before 1500 BCE, enjoys a position of highest regard and authority. By modern scholarly estimation, it is “the oldest literary monument of the Indo-European languages” and, indeed, “one of the oldest and most precious documents of man” (Myers 1995, p. 25, quoting Macdonell 1917, p. xi; Maurer 1986, p. 1). Probably featured among the last creation(s) survived to us in such a fine and unbroken tradition from late Bronze Age and considered probably as the oldest religious book (since Epic of Gilgamesh is not considered religious text).

@Abee - You may have inadvertently fallen afoul of the Sc^nthorpe Supremacy. Great upload.

@caesar963
I think I failed to understand your cryptic comment. Too enigmatic to understand? Google didn’t help me either with that word. Anyways my comment should not be interpreted otherwise, large part of that was quoted from other sources (I mentioned); I simply copy pasted from different books/wiki. But my message was to say with so many words is that this audiobook’s narration is superb but translation is a big failure and thus should be taken into consideration as well by listeners and should be taken as a pinch of salt. Thanks.

This book could be considered the oldest extant work by the ancestors of anyone who is the descendants of indo-european speakers… that’s a lot of people.
How about the Avesta? It is only slightly later I think.

I understand; but sometimes when your innocuous comment or text refuses to post, there may be a combination of letters being blocked for ethical purposes - this is referred to as the Sc^nthorpe problem (the missing letter is “u” which probably reveals the hidden “obscenity” - Sc^nthorpe is merely an industrial town in England, with understandably sheepish, chagrined denizens).
An overactive spam filter is likely the excessively censorious culprit.

The unfortunate residents of Bollocksburg and Phuckwittsville share a similar problem.

The name Abee has long been a legend on TPB.
Thank you
And if you have any Zoroastrian works, always looking for those in audio.

Thus uploaded Zoroaster…

@caesar963
Ahh! okay. Didn’t know that. Thank you for letting me know.
@ehead
I don’t think anyone ever made Audiobook on Gathas (you mean Gathas not Avesta as Avesta is a language , Gatha is the text/book written in Gathas).
@ssafe05
Well I’m blushing now. :) I still upload on TPB, I created new account as I forgot the password of the old one.
And as for any Zoroastrian works, I’m afraid none. So far Only ebooks. I couldn’t find direct translation/ book of Zoroatrianism as Audiobook. Anyways if you or someone else is looking for ebook then I can suggest.
The Inner Fire: Faith, Choice, and Modern-Day Living in Zoroastrianism by Rohinton Fali Nariman 2016
Good and modern translation of Gathas and other Zoroastrianism literature and some other commentaries from writer, overall a very good book.
I uploaded that on TPB few years ago but I don’t think torrent is still alive so download from the following link. Its a retail ePub.

@Abee,
Thank you for The Inner Fire. Appreciate it.
I regularly check Zakareya and a few other for ebooks.
I picked up a print copy of Zoroastrians: Their Religious Beliefs and Practices by Mary Boyce. Very authoritative and well researched, and not one that can be multi-tasked. I’ve been trying to better grasp how much early Judaism may have been influenced by Zoroastrian thought - and disagree with Bart Ehrman’s recent book on the first Christians that summarily dismisses the influence of Zoroastrian thought (methinks he wanted to write what he knew for the audience he knows and thought of it as a rabbit hole he didn’t want to go down).
Great community here, including the pleasure of the sartorial panache of learned caesar.

The Bart-man should indeed be fully conversant with the fervid ferment of the Axial Age.

can i just say how lovely it is to read on so many pages, the scholarly banter between abee and caesar, ssafe and others. where else do you guys hang out online? cheers

Thank you for this one Abee. I had read this one sometime back and totally agree that the translation of this one does not do justice to the original text.
