From the New York Times bestselling author of White Rage, an unflinching, critical new look at the Second Amendment—and how it has been engineered to deny the rights of African Americans since its inception.
In The Second, historian and award-winning, bestselling author of White Rage Carol Anderson powerfully illuminates the history and impact of the Second Amendment, how it was designed, and how it has consistently been constructed to keep African Americans powerless and vulnerable. The Second is neither a “pro-gun” nor an “anti-gun” book; the lens is the citizenship rights and human rights of African Americans.
From the seventeenth century, when it was encoded into law that the enslaved could not own, carry, or use a firearm whatsoever, until today, with measures to expand and curtail gun ownership aimed disproportionately at the African American population, the right to bear arms has been consistently used as a weapon to keep African Americans powerless—revealing that armed or unarmed, Blackness, it would seem, is the threat that must be neutralized and punished.
Throughout American history to the twenty-first century, regardless of the laws, court decisions, and changing political environment, the Second has consistently meant this: That the second a Black person exercises this right, the second they pick up a gun to protect themselves (or the second that they don’t), their life—as surely as Philando Castile’s, Tamir Rice’s, Alton Sterling’s–may be snatched away in that single, fatal second. Through compelling historical narrative merging into the unfolding events of today, Anderson’s penetrating investigation shows that the Second Amendment is not about guns but about anti-Blackness, shedding shocking new light on another dimension of racism in America.

Wow. I didn’t know they could stack s**t that high.
I sold guns as a living for years. I treated every man and woman, regardless of color, alphabet-orientation or some other non-visible oppressive state of being,as defined by SJW’s, the absolute same. A black FBI agent came in the store, unannounced, asking to buy a shotgun and a handgun. I graciously walked him through the process and he was approved for the sale. When we were complete, he thanked me for not looking down my nose at him. Two weeks later, he returned with some friends and waited until I was free to have them talk to me for their sales. He admitted that he was “testing” the waters to see if someone would treat him poorly due to his skin color. I smiled, silently offended and said, “Sir, I treat everyone equally, until you give me a reason not to.”
The Second Amendment is for all citizens who can legally own a firearm. Good, sane, moral people absolutely have equal rights under the Constitution. Nowhere in the document does it mention only Whites should have guns.
Stop with this drivel. Stop with the victimhood. Stop with the hate. We all live on this dustball together. You do your thing, I’ll do mine. We don’t have to like each others actions, just leave me alone and I’ll do the same. Peace out.

Oh, I didn’t know that one book could contain so many lies at once.

So now they find racism in the 2nd Amendment? Wow…just reaching for straws now. The means to stop a tyrannical government is now racist? Armed or unarmed blacks…so it’s either or? How can people keep believing this garbage?

It’d be nice if the people giving commentary to history actually read a history book once in a while. No, the Constitution doesn’t mention only Whites should have guns. The Constitution doesn’t specify which skin-tone it talks about when referring to We The People since everyone knew who they were talking about (and it wasn’t the slaves). Considering it took punting the issue of discussing slavery to the next generation of White men to even get the document ratified, one could make the case the whole original document (and the Bill of Rights) were blatantly racist by dismissing an entire demographic (and the Indigenous populations) altogether.
I’d include a story about treating a pistol the same as I would a rifle just to add balance to the other completely irrelevant story to the context of the history described in the book’s synopsis but that’d just be reaching for straws. The offense that should have been taken in the aforementioned story isn’t that the Black FBI agent assumed racist of the gun-dealer but rather that he felt the need to vet the new place at all because some other gun-dealer(s) likely didn’t share the equal-opportunity ethos.
Stop with the victimhood. That would be nice. And I’m sure it’s a goal. They can’t stop being victims, however, until they’ve gotten justice. Sure, there are micro-injustices happening everyday and every once in a great while some justice to balance it…but the great injustices inflicted by one demographic onto another for a century past when the Constitution finally abolished slavery (or, rather, the right to own someone) and set a people free don’t have a perpetrator to be held responsible. The pronoun-triggered gun-dealer is a testament to that. We don’t live in the same America that subjugated Black people during Jim Crow. Everyone in America is a product of that world, the backroom dealings lost to history but their decisions reverberating for generations. The fallback is the government-at-large. It makes it seem like a Black man taking a knee to protest racial injustice hates his country when that’s only a nut-job talking point glorified by indignant spokesmen to inflame a gullible population. I’d rather someone take a knee during the National Anthem than convert a moving truck and park it outside a federal building and then detonate it to express their displeasure. But I digress….
Thanks for the upload!

Wait…. Someone actually bought this book and then took the time to rip the trash and post it? That’s some real masochism!

“…the Right of the People, to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
“People” = code for white people only? Please……
Never mind that all gun control measures introduced by DEMOCRATS, were intended to keep guns out of the hands of recent released slaves… still are today. Jim Crowe also a result of DEMOCRATS. Most KKK members (including Robert Byrd)…DEMOCRATS. Anti-(any measure to include African Americans) were resisted by DEMOCRATS. Who continues to hate the Constitution today, which protects the Rights of ALL Americans….. DEMOCRATS!!!
See the pattern yet?

Your anecdotal experiences are not necessarily representative of every experience. When I started getting into marksmanship, it took me several tries to find a gun shop where I wasn’t ignored. In one store, I was told they didn’t have any rifles though I could see them on the display racks, though other customers were helped with the same Remington I was thinking of buying.
It had never occurred to me that I would run into any problems. I’d taken the NRA beginning rifle class. I’d done some reading and research. I knew the basics of what I wanted, but hoped a knowledgeable salesperson would help me narrow down my choices to what would best for my goals. Instead, one store told me that they weren’t a good fit for me — the store my instructor had specifically recommended.
Eventually, I found a store, bought a rifle, and started target shooting. I went with a friend to his sportsman’s club for a while. Until he was told my sort wasn’t really welcome there. I planned to keep my membership application in consideration, but he left the club because he didn’t want to be part of a place like that.
I’m not saying my experience is universal. But you can’t say that your experiences are either. I think we should take the time in life to hear what others have to say and not immediately jump into a defensive attack mode. The only way we can continue to exist as a society is if we take a moment and actually listen to and consider experiences outside or own.

Kyle Rittenhouse takes an AR15 into a riot, looking for an excuse to shoot someone at a BLM protest. Cops give him a bottle of water. After he murders two people, the judge treats him like his long lost son.
Meanwhile black families are burying relatives who were shot by police when reaching for their cell phones.
Sure, gun laws aren’t racist.

The Black Panthers were huge advocates of the second amendment. Which is a major reason why the Republican party, KKK and NRA all advocated for stricter gun control laws 54 years ago.
November 16th, 2021
My my. A lot of people aren’t familiar with what happens to black people in the US who exercise their right to bear arms in the same way that white people do.
I feel that, every time a US senator (almost always white, old and male) interrupts a woman giving testimony before the US senate 50 AR-15s should be donated to the National African American Gun Association in that senator’s name along with 50 bus tickets to the next Q related rally. Might not be able to solve race relations, but I suspect it’d rapidly makes some of these ancient senators a heck of a lot more polite. Also, Q rallies would suddenly become considerably better behaved.

Sounds like “African Americans suffered the most when Germany invaded Poland in 1939!”

Jack, you do know that the NRA had a black panther chapter don’t you? They sent people down to help them organize. The only racists are the Democrats (yeah including the kkk) and they try to keep people of color (code for coloreds) down today…
November 16th, 2021
@zombie13 nice revisionist history you’ve got there. It’d be a shame if someone were to come along and mention the Mulford act and that the KKK have openly supported the Republican party for quite some time now.
If a 156 year old historical ‘gotcha’ is the best you can do, that’s pretty lame.
November 19th, 2021
@zombie13, actually when the Black Panthers made headlines for open carry of firearms, the NRA supported changing the laws to stop them. Know how I know this?
Wait for it…
I READ THE BOOK!

The fact that the Black FBI agent has to ask you whether you will be fair is not an insult to you, personally, but a reflection of his world.
Obviously, he wants to have a gun. Lots of black people do, because in many cases, the police won’t protect them. They have to protect themselves.
But they also have to be careful about who they do business with, because some people try to hassle them, just because they are black. Same reason white people don’t frequent liquor stores in inner city black neighborhoods.
You don’t want a hassle.

Not Guilty !!
January 3rd, 2022
The vast majority of black homicide(legal or otherwise) victims are killed by blacks. And despite whites having more guns blacks kill more whites in interracial homicide than vice versa by a factor of 5. Just look at the FBI statistics if you don’t believe me. And don’t even get started on the rape and assault rates. It takes a special kind of duplicity to claim that when blacks rape 30-40k white women each year and statically speaking no black woman is raped by a white man in the same time frame that the problem of violence in the US is white on black or police on black.
Blacks pop off and do something foolish which others(including other blacks) interpret as threatening and then they get greased. And given table 43 can you really blame them?
Oh and before libtards try anything the poorest whites commit less than a fourth the crime as the most affluent blacks so don’t even bother bringing up income or population density we all know what is going on here. Race is real so just accept it.

lolololol the butthurt comments from the conservatives snowflakes are hilarious. Without reading this book and just looking at the comments, I can see most of the opinions here are formed by biased media. The history of something can not be discussed using present-day statistics, laws, and POV @12345combination (FOH with your FBI stats. Yes, race is real, and so is social engineering). Is it so hard to believe that when most of these laws were conceived, Blacks were considered 3/5 of a person? A lot of the country was upset Blacks had freedom. Do you really think they wanted “them” to have guns? I’m not going to get long-winded because it’s useless. Most of you live in an alternate reality where America has only done good by its citizens (until Obama and Jan. 6). FOH, enjoy your delusion while I’ll check out this book.
Ps white folks who want the truth, not this pandering to your ego crap you get from revisionist right-wing media, check out a podcast called seeing white (by white people)for a glimpse into reality.
