The Earth is flat; the World Trade Center collapse was a controlled demolition; planes are spraying poison to control the weather; and actors faked the Sandy Hook massacre….
All these claims are bunk: falsehoods, mistakes, and in some cases, outright lies. But many people passionately believe one or more of these conspiracy theories. They consume countless books and videos, join like-minded online communities, try to convert those around them, and even, on occasion, alienate their own friends and family. Why is this, and how can you help people, especially those closest to you, break free from the downward spiral of conspiracy thinking?
In ‘Escaping the Rabbit Hole’, author Mick West shares over a decade’s worth of knowledge and experience investigating and debunking false conspiracy theories through his forum, MetaBunk.org, and sets forth a practical guide to helping friends and loved ones recognize these theories for what they really are.
Perhaps counterintuitively, the most successful approaches to helping individuals escape a rabbit hole aren’t comprised of simply explaining why they are wrong; rather, West’s tried-and-tested approach emphasizes clear communication based on mutual respect, honesty, openness, and patience.
West puts his debunking techniques and best practices to the test with four of the most popular false conspiracy theories today (chemtrails, 9/11 controlled demolition, false flags, and flat Earth) - providing road maps to help you to understand your friend and help them escape the rabbit hole. These are accompanied by real-life case studies of individuals who, with help, were able to break free from conspiracism.
With sections on:
- The wide spectrum of conspiracy theories
- Avoiding the “shill” label
- Psychological factors and other complications
- And concluding with a look at the future of debunking
Mick West has put forth a conclusive, well-researched, practical reference on why people fall down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole and how you can help them escape.

What if popty_ping posted their 1000th debunker book and nobody came?

Nobody goes down the rabbit hole because they are successful, popular and respected.
Keeping your focus on a conspiracy theory helps you forget what a failure you are. But it won’t stop other folk from noticing.

There are conspiracy theories and then there are conspiracy facts. What about Covid was made in a lab? Hunter Biden’s laptop? MKULTRA. Russiagate.
The Tuskegee experiment. I think there’s ample proof that there are conspiracy theories. There’s just disagreement as to which ones are true.

Problem is conspiracy-tards are not in it for the truth (a truth, same as all humans since we evolved to full behavioral modernity). Conspiracies serve a different purpose for them, which is why it’s a waste of time whipping out facts. One thing they don’t want though, is for you to give up trying to convince them otherwise. If everyone suddenly agreed with the conspiracy crew it would ruin it for them & they would immediately move on. They share an exclusivity bug with the rich, only with the rich it’s an exclusive physical item not an exclusive narrative.

**People Drawn to Conspiracy Theories Share a Cluster of Psychological Features**
.
“Stephan Lewandowsky was deep in denial. Nearly 10 years ago the cognitive scientist threw himself into a study of why some people refuse to accept the overwhelming evidence that the planet is warming and humans are responsible. As he delved into this climate change denialism, Lewandowsky, then at the University of Western Australia, discovered that many of the naysayers also believed in outlandish plots, such as the idea that the Apollo moon landing was a hoax created by the American government. “A lot of the discourse these people were engaging in on the Internet was totally conspiratorial,” he recalls.”

‘
Prior to the internet conspiracy folk had newsletters and like today it was mostly an American export.
‘
Something THEY put in the American water supply that causes mass paranoia and conspiracy thinking?
‘
The truth is 99.99% of humans are climate change deniers. The critic does not want to hear about the denial category he & the rest of the managerial-thinking class are in. First, they need dumb deniers so as to not have to answer why their energy & consumption over the last 30 years is identical to everyone else in their income category? IF the 50% of western populations who say climate change is a serious issue cut just a modest, but doable 25% of their energy/consumption it would show up in the econimic numbers and layoffs, but no shuch thing has happened. Any fool who can read a basic chart or graph for energy consumption and CO2 emissions will see it’s gone steadily up since 1988 when climate became a big issue and all the serious, no doubt warnings began. Now the destruction, as advertised has begun. It’ll get around to destroying all you hold dear. That means all of us. Money can’t save us from physics, but by all means keep denying if that’s helps you get out of bed.

Anyone who itemises big beautiful con theories, yet cunningly omits flat earth 9/11 chemtrails & our great reptilian overlords (peace be upon them) is ipso facto part of the creepy con theory concatenation - a shill for conspi-racism.
You need to finally get your head out of that poor rabbit’s hole.

“the ‘discourse’ these peop were engaging in on net” - Yeah, I don’t think so. Just try reasoning with malfunctioning Putin prop bots on here (”Putin is real democrat!” - “He liberate Ukraine!” - “Putin strong like Bull!” - “I love him!”) - like the insanely ignorant Jew-hating racist, Wobbly1933, & the dementedly repetitive Loewe IQ - there’s precious little “discourse” possible with these con theorising specimens. Genocide denial/support, obvious victim blaming, “Gaddafi was paradise!” & “Dark Forces are trying to silence us!” is the inane, hateful shyte they incessantly spew.

@pryderi
That cuts both ways. People with a degree of social status are going to be more cautious about expressing heterodox views. When you have something to lose, you are reticent to risk it. Besides, since when was truth determined by what’s cool?
People with shared interests often conspire together, even over meaningless things. Powerful people have a much greater incentive to conspire. If you think that those who run society don’t plan together and don’t have contingencies in place for dealing with dissenters, you aren’t rational.
While some people may be conspiracy theorists to cope with being losers (or because retarded), others deny the existence of conspiracies as they can’t cope with the notion that their leaders don’t care about them or worse, mean them ill.
Retarded conspiracy theories serve the purpose of tarring all conspiracies with the retard brush, making the truth harder to discern. A conspiracy to deter conspiracy theorising, if you will.

There’s only one real, true conspiracy theory and that is that white european christians have been behind every single conspiracy theory and every real atrocity for the last several hundred years.
Jews control the world banking system? No, white european christians do and they also created this conspiracy theory to make the rest of us hate jews.
When israel and palestine fight, white european christians sit in the corner and laugh: “good, divide and rule,” they claim while salivating.
What is militant islam? It’s the white european christian way of making sure the rest of us hate the RIGHT people. Militant christianity is the reason why you hear spanish, french and english in so many african, asian and american countries.
Wake up and realize that every single conspiracy theory you have ever heard was either created by white european christians to make you hate someone they hate, and/or to cover up their own atrocities.
It’s time the rest of us stopped believing white european christians and started realizing what snivelling, lying, manipulating, spineless cowards they really are.

@koloko
Christianity is the dominant faith in South America, where it is not native. This is true to a lesser extent in Africa, and to a much lesser extent in Asia (particularly Southern Asia).
And the reason Christianity has made far less progress in Africa and Southern Asia, is because in those regions it met Militant Islam. Northern Nigeria is a stronghold of Boko Haram.
If you need to tell half a story, you need to be among folk less informed than yourself. You probably need to work on that.

@koloko If it wasn’t for European Christians you would be writing this post on a Bongo Drum

Guys, guys, calm down! koloko is obviously a Racist Prick.
All the world’s problems are down to evil White Europeans. Who profited from slavery. How dare we profit from a coloured man’s livelihood.
Worse, we then said slavery was bad and abolished it. Stopping honourable, respectful coloured persons selling their kin and destroying an industry that had been working without issue for tens of thousands of years.
It’s about time that White Christians everywhere realise the hardship we have caused by abolishing the slave trade not only in our countries but the rest of the world. Thousands of good non-white non-European non Christians made a good living before the white man interfered with his outrageous claims of the evil of slavery.
BAD WHITE MAN!!

@koloko
You seem hooked on the whites-are-to-be-blamed-for-everything idea, which I thinks isn’t very good for you.
On the funny note though, I feel sorry for you, that you are not white, because if you would be, you might have better pleasant life, less loaded with anger, hate and bitterness.
On the other hand, I think, this isn’t a question of race but of nature, education, ideology, humanity.
