In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion.
Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
Chapterized, I manually added the chapter names to it, so you can easily navigate through the books!

Thank you so much for the upload. Really appreciate the effort you’ve put into it.

Thanks! Though .opus is a rather odd choice (or at least one I’ve never seen used) for audiobooks.
I kow it was developed for Voice but as far as I know it’s aim was Voip… anyway, for people downloading this one make sure your player can handle the extention or you can transcode it yourself (InAudible can’t handle the chapters in this fileformat, VLCplayer can).

completely and utterly wrong. Why is it people cannot simply use google? The open-source and patent free CODEC that improves upon (and thus replaces) CODECs like AAC covers all sound use, from ultra low bit mono speech to near transparent multi channel music archival storage.
The downside of OPUS is that few battery powered devices have a dedicated hardware decode block, meaning your phone will give much better battery life using a no-display MP3 player than a CPU based OPUS decode. Even so the CPU usage to decode OPUS is low on a modern device.
This sound CODEC is the future, alongside VP9 for patent free video encode/decode.

Why do people upload content in obscure stinky codecs. You might as well tell us how to burn it on to a laser disc to play on our 8-track contraptions. FOH.

I don’t much care for the tone of your message as I did actually check. And while I might have be slightly off on my interpetation voice was definitely one of it’s goals.
Info per Fileinfo & Wikipedia:
“designed to efficiently code speech and general audio in a single format, while remaining low-latency enough for real-time interactive communication and low-complexity enough for low-end embedded processors.”
My point was also not to be a jackass, because the audio is great and the effort for uploading is very much appriciated. (also visible by me not 1 starring the AB as I hadn’t had time to check for quality at that time)
I just wanted to inform people of the fire-format because it is not a generally used one.
I’m all for opensource and I hope it is the future, but declaring “This sound CODEC is the future, alongside VP9 for patent free video encode/decode.” makes you sound like a jackass.

Hello I would like to thank you for doing all this work to chapterise these books. how ever they are not chapterised at least it doesn’t seem to be the case. I am blind and I had some one look at these files and they said the following “Hi Mich,
I checked and the opus files are huge files and not chapterized. I played the opus file with Grovy music player.
The first file lasts 11 hours, 25 minutes and 28 seconds!
No wonder, that by pressing the letter n the file starts anew!
It won’t be easy to cut up these things chapter by chapter.
Maybe when someone qho can use his/her eyes can load it in audacity and see where a larger space is and then cut the file up.
I know that I can’t do it. Sad, but true.” I also tryed to play this book in vlc media player and when I hit n to go to the next track as I said I am blind and use the keybord and keystrokes not the mouse it just started over again so to me there is no way that the books are chapterised. maybe as my friend said above if some one with a working pair of eyes was to look at this files in addossidey or another program able to split lare files they could find a way to split these files by chaptor but it is not possible in the format they are in. the same go’s for the mp3’s that I found on this sight of these same recordings they are each one big long mp3 and not able to split by chaptor unless some one did this by hand.

Opus is the only audio format that should be used for 32 Kbps audiobooks.
Hear comparison between 32 Kbps Opus and Mp3 below.

For ANYONE complaining about the format being used to share a FREE AUDIO BOOK, if you don’t like it, go buy the version YOU PERFER. The never of some people to seriously complain because the format being used isn’t “convenient for them” is pathetic. I am not referring to you Dominance, I fully understood the meaning behind your message was to be helpful.

@michv1983, just checked and the files are most definitely chapterized. I played them with the IINA player on a Mac and it had no problem recognising the chapters. VLC on the other hand did not see the chapters.

Have to agree with Eddiej1880. If you don’t like the format, go and buy it or convert it to a format you do like.

I didn’t like the Serkis version. There were so many names pronounced incorrectly, it just became annoying - unless everyone in the past has done them wrong??. thanks for the download
